There cannot be disagreement when facts rule! Hey, be proud of NYC, they got their arses kicked in the revolution there, they started violent riots during the civil war against serving in the army, they first claim to fame was sticking it to the indians for Manhatten... proud...proud place.

This may be the strangest topic I've ever wasted my time reading... or posting in...
Seems to me some have come dangerously close to, if they're not outright guilty of, racial slurs. That aside, regarding what one "chooses to believe" about the facts: I was having a chat with a young girl who was just starting to learn her multiplication tables. She decided to show me what she was learning, and said, "two times two is two." I replied, "No, sweetie, two times ONE is two. Two times two is FOUR." She disagreed, insisting that it was two. I explained the basic math involved and showed her two groups of two pencils each, and how when we took the two groups times the two pencils, we ended up with four pencils. She looked me right in the eye and said, "Well, that's YOUR opinion, but I believe that it's TWO!" Something is either true, or it isn't true. Truth, by its very nature, is absolute and extremely "narrow-minded"--anything that is even partially "other" than truth is NOT truth. Two plus two is ALWAYS four--it cannot be, by its very nature, two, or eleven, or 654,328.36792. So a person can choose to believe that "Jazz" originated in NYC. Heck, some folks believe it started in Utah--after all, that's the name of their NBA team! Of course, those people don't know their history--that the Utah Jazz used to be the NEW ORLEANS Jazz. Believe what you want--just be aware that in this case, you're believing a lie.

Yes, interesting string here...Hmmmmmm.
Not sure how it morphed into all of this back & forth. Seems Justin showed a pretty good montage on some Harlem sites, then the plane hits quite a bit of turbulence. I think "intent" is important here but interpretation has taken us all over the place and opened the doors to a lot of off-the-cuff stuff. Hey, I grew up in Harlem and I'm not exactly sure where Jazz originated. I do know that Harlem was a great hotspot for it during its rennaisance period where all sort of artists contributed to its evolution in the way of this black "epicenter." As with anything, anyone and everywhere, there is the good, the bad and the ugly. Heck, that's usually in our families as well, so of course it would manifest in our environments. Anyone wanting to know specifics can look them up on the same computer that has access to this website, further out onto the web. Where Jazz originated is not a difficult thing to know or research, nor does it show how smart you are to know it. Facts are important but mistakes are a part of developing good facts. Challenging facts is how we progress and learn to inter-relate what we know toward better knowing and appreciation...Is this not true? So, let's stop getting our pants leg caught in the chain, especially when all we have to do to avoid it is to so simply roll the pant leg up a little and keep biking on. I'm all for being able to laugh at ourselves and not take one's self too seriously but let's not cross lines maliciously or in bad spirits. Some jokes can be insulting to some people and not mean a thing to others. How's about we stick to the road here, stay out of bushes that have always been bad for us as a people, appreciate the good and well-intentioned, rid ourselves of that which stunts our growth or hurts and keep moving toward the "Change" that shows us to be more alike than different. Just my view but let's just stick to the magic in all things. -Mb And hey Justin the montage brought back a lot of memories. Thanks bro.

Scott, I really doubt anyone thinks that Jazz originated in Utah or that Viking rampage in Minnisota or that 49ers are mining the streets of San Francisco.

But for now, I have no idea what this topic is about anymore, so I shall say thanks to Justin for the nice video of Harlem, and let Santa know that I have TWO Iranian pro basketball players who are also jazz musicians (both basketball and jazz originated in Iran) sleeping on my couch (I had to roll them each up like a sleeping bag and tie them up to get them to fit), and let everyone know that today I'm gay, but yesterday I was a bit blue. With that, I take my leave.

Oh, if we talk about Harlem, I have to mention one of my heroes: Malcolm X
The Autobiography Of Malcolm X by Alex Haley should be a must read in the curriculum of schools. Youtube has allot of videos of Brother Malcolm and you can see what a brilliant orator he was. People tried to out debate him and couldn't. He could see all sides, while they only saw one. He was and still is, quite a misunderstood civil rights figure, which is why I think that book is an important read. Ozzie Davis gave the eulogy of Malcolm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZN1_t6d2BM

I'm not sure, Justin. It was going to be torn down, but some very smart folks held protests and portions of it were saved, including a museum about Malcolm. It should have been preserved as hallowed ground.

Washington Heights. Malcolm was always a symbol of racial and religious tolerance who embraced people of all races and beliefs and held them in high esteem.
