The word is "guest" after all. Balducci made the point about how hotel rooms are left and it is dead on accurate all by itself.
Trust me the owning mentality is pretty self centered. "House first" is the philisophy, meaning if the house is not there you don't have a job. So the "extra fixings" you speak of are really pretty pointless to charge for, and you lose a good $40 on the night. That bites. It is tough to own a place. The battles are constant. It takes a special type to be able to do that. It really does. It takes a VERY special person to be able to make both staff and guests happy. IT CAN BE DONE. Your right it does effect the customers. They are TRAINED to complain. Not good to do this with them.

If you keep track of the tips you received that did not total 15-20% of the total bill, the Gov't has a plan to make up the difference.. Of course that is assuming how one is entitled to the tip but had no problem ripping off the IRS (Gov't) of their fair share of 27% .....

Yup. $3 - $4 every day. My wife always adds a "for housekeeping" note, just to be safe.

If I hire a Magician and he is bad, can I deduct from the fee?
Kind of like a reverse tip? |

You can, but if you hired me and signed an agreement I'd have you held to unreverse it.

Obviously a lot depends on the service and the length of stay. For one night I usually leave two dollars. For longer stays I leave according to the service, usually two to four dollars per day. This frequently guarantees good service and extras if I need them.
The following story from my book "The Funny Side Of Magic" had nothing to do with tipping; however, I thought it appropriate to tell here. Most of you know of Don Alan, the performing magician, writer and creator of fine magic. How many of you know of Don Alan the practical joker? He didn't reveal the practical joker side of his personality often but when he did it was sure to be a winner. My favorite Don Alan story involves Don and his maid. Not his housemaid, but the maid who cleans the hotel room after the occupant has stepped out. I was told that when Don checked into a hotel he would bring his own soap, towels, toilet paper and a box of sanitary toilet seat covers. What he did next shines some light on his humorous side. During his hotel stay, which was quite often four to seven days, he would use only his own towels, which after the use he would hide in an empty suitcase. He would use only his own toilet paper and leave the hotel's paper untouched, and every time he would use the toilet he would replace the torn toilet seat cover with one of the new ones that he brought along. One can only imagine the thoughts and questions that must have gone through the maid's mind after the third or fourth day of his stay. I wonder if the maid tipped Don for his efforts.
