Is it just my observation or are the same illusions just sitting on the Magic Auction?? Sure times are tough and you would think most would like to unload some equipment that is just collecting dust in the garage.
Now is the time to buy but, I'm not seeing the bargains like we should be. There are a couple of things still on my "Wish List" but unless it's at the right price .. I'll just have to wait. Your thoughts .. Steve |

I would like to have a garage to fill with props to collect dust LOL
Apartment living isn't conducive to building or storing props. Overall, I have to agree. It seems like the "deals" right now are on junk primarily found on Ebay, although I have been able to locate a few things I wouldn't mind owniong, but much like you say, the price has to be right.

Hey Steve. I've noticed it as well. On rare occasion I see someone reducing the price of a few things, but not very often. About the only ones I see that seem to be decent deals are a few older props that the seller wants picked up only. A lot of the others seem to be pretty near the price of a new prop. There are a few props that I've seen here on the Café I'm hoping to wheel and deal on as soon as I get my tax return. As for stuff in the garage gathering dust, I must admit I have my share. I really should try to sell them before something happens to them.

Snap Illusions (ugh) had a New Indian Lester Lake head chopper on eBay. The price was never the same each time I looked at it. The lowest I saw it was $195 OBO with free shipping. A steal!

Buy it from snap if you want to support their business practices. I do not.

I have a list of some illusions that I am selling for another illusionist friend if any one is interested. The props are Million Dollar Mystery made by Spalsh, Smoke Chamber made by Mendoza, Water Levi made by Bill Smith, and a couple of more. PM me if you are interested.

_MB_,
We are not talking about not receiving props, which apparently happened with snap, but rather them knocking off various illusions.

I, for one, have had an illusion on there for quite some time. I was made 2 offers WAY under asking price .... 1/3 to 1/2 less, which I refused.
It costs me nothing to have my prop gather dust. It's a good piece of equipment that is being offered at a really good price. How low should someone be expected to go? |

See that's the thing ... you have your asking price and then another 11% is added on top of that. When your talking about an illusion that goes for over $7,000.00 then it's not much of a bargain. In fact many are just below the retail price of a new illusion.
After all is said and down .. it's not the bargain you would expect for a used piece of equipment. Sure many hold their value but, if I'm going to drop that kind of money .. I'd rather buy new. Steve |

While there are also a bunch of full priced illusions on the site listed by builders, IllusionSource also has a couple good deals starting to appear now. There's a Dream Illusion Sub Trunk, A suspension 3001 and a Head Chopper all worth checking out. The suspension 3001 looks like it's about 20% off the price of a new one and is in amazing condition. Built by Blaney himself.
By the way, IllusionSource also takes a smaller cut than the other sites, coming in at only 9% Illusions can be hard to part with. I know I still have a flying carpet stored away that I bought used from Tony Eng years ago. I haven't used it for about 5 years and I've still got the thing. I guess for me, it's hard to get rid of a prop that I've squeezed so much out of over the years.

Back to this; I find it so comical when people try to sell there used prop for 10% less than what its worth retailed from the actual builder. Honestly, there are VERY few props that retain there value and I would sooner pay the additional 10% and have a BRAND NEW one built. Used props should be listed at 30-40% less than retail value, even if its in 'VG' condition. I laugh when people expect to get close to full value on their props; yes, some retain value (MPS, Interlude, Origami etc etc etc) but its because they are harder to find or get built. Make it worth people's money to buy used.
Sure it could be better off collecting dust, but honestly you might never sell it if you are only going to sell a $5,000 prop for $900 less. To be honest, often with some professional builders, if business is slow or they are already building the same prop, you can negotiate with them and save 10% off a BRAND NEW ONE! So like I said, make it worth peoples money and time to buy used!! Also, Chris, I for one LOVE illusionsource.com ; I was SO VERY EXCITED that someone was attempting to jump ahead of the 1996 Magic Auction website, but honestly, I think listing dealers was a mistake. If I wanted to buy something from them, I would go right to their site to do so - unless they are willing to offer a 10-20% discount on their props that are listed, I wouldn't even bother. I think it pushes people away because they are worried that there prop isn't up to snuff to be listed or feel it will get lost with all the new stuff and not even be seen....not sure why it hasn't taken off, I tell people all the time to go to it and list with it, but I think removing some of those illusions would be better off. I personally happened to sell something off the site, and was very happy to. You guys only charged me a couple of bucks and it maximized my profit. I was also able to list my prop at 30-40% cheaper because there wasn't an extra 10% added to the cost. Mine was brand new too! Just some thoughts! |

I think that some props are just to nice too lower the price on.
For example, I have a Blaney Suspension that I am trying to sell. This is a top quality prop, and poor economy or not I am not prepared to lower it to an insulting level. I know that some day, a magician who knows the value of such a professional piece of equipment will come around. Until such time, I will be a good caretaker. |

I guess it really depends on if you need the cash now, then you drop the price.
There are a few props I would love to add to my show but, unless it's a bargain I'll have to wait .. it's just that simple. Steve |

No way will I be taking a loan out on something just to add it to my show. I had posted in another thread that I am buying smaller illusions that I can afford so that I can have a bigger stage show to eventually purchase the illusions I want. Even with a great deal, if I cannot afford it, I won't be getting it.
If something was only a couple of hundred dollars cheaper, like I have seen origami's (one I want) go for, I would buy it brand new. Why? I am about 40 minutes away from Wellington and can pick one up (drive there) brand new and save on shipping and insurance for the prop. It would take an incredible deal for me to buy something right now, as I don't have an illusion show yet. I am starting to put the show together slowly, over time, as the props become available to me, be it purchasing them or building them.
