I have very sensitive skin as well, in fact I cant even use an electric because especially my neck will be fire-engine red and itches like crazy. My dad is like that as well.
Whether a straight- or safety razor would be worse for you, that's a tough one. I don't notice any real difference between the straight razor and a mach 3. After shave stings a lot more after a straight razor shave, but my skin doesn't look any different. I always use a good moisturizer on my face after a shave and that helps to keep the skin in better shape. Whether using a straight razor, safety razor or a disposable one, they all have one advantage. You get rid of the dead layer of skin on your face.

Just a side note for those interested in how things can differ from one country to the next:
I decided to check out some of the websites linked to in this thread. Curiously enough, the one I linked to didn't have hardly anything. That is because I linked to Manufaktum in America, assuming they offered the same stuff. They don't. Manufaktum is one of the single coolest stores I know of: they sell carefully selected, "best of the best" stuff that you don't ever throw away. I love their concept. But it was stupid of me to assume they sell the same exact stuff on their American website. Here's the link to the German website, just for fun. I know most of you can't read it, but you can compare it to see what I was thinking when posting the link: http://www.manufactum.de/Kategorie/172501/Rasur.html Interestingly, all of the safety razors at artofshaving.com come from Germany, and are made by the same company whose razors are sold by Manufactum. My guess is that the straight razors are too. Maybe even the brushes. I'm seriously thinking about this. I'm a bit worried about cutting my head off, though. And Santa: I've had the same problem trying to find a barber who knows how to use clippers EVERYWHERE I've lived...until now. Back in the day, I had a good barber in Dallas, but he was old and the last of a dying breed. Here there are a TON of good barbers: but you've got to know where to look. They are all foreigners like Turks and Iraqis. Apparently there is still a barber shop culture in some of the more...uh...macho societies. There they train barbers who are experts with clippers, and they open up shops where lots of men hang out to shoot the sh!t and occasionally get their hair cut. So I figure that the same thing must also be true in America. Maybe not out in the friggin desert, but at least in bigger cities. You go where the foreigners hang out. Look for some Arab who has a shop next to some halal food store or restaurant, and that guy will know how to use clippers. I think. He could probably give you a good shave, too; but don't start talking politics. |

What a good selection! I am still looking for a good brush and stand for it so I guess I gotta check them out more carefully.
My razor is on top row. Well almost anyways-mine is the same model but the handle is olive wood, other than the handle material, its identical.

I go to a "real" barber shop that specializes in clipper cuts, and my barber (the owner of the shop) is a Persian (Iranian) who was raised in Turkey and, later, Italy. He's a master with a set of clippers, but is unskilled with a straight razor. But health regulations wouldn't permit him to use one anyway. I'm literally logging off and heading out to see him for my every-other-week haircut now... |
