Thanks Marty, over the years I've had so many people ask me to put the instructions on a DVD as they can't follow the written instructions, I come from the old school and learned everything from books so I find this easy to do, but I fully understand why a DVD would be easier for this type effect.
Yes this is an old effect, which is worrying as this means I'm also getting freaking old lol!! Speak soon mate, Gary.

The correct response to this request is to hit the person over the head with a copy of The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings (or similar weighty tome). Works every time |

Haha, Ive been in so many debates on this very subject over the years, but saying that, I'm slowly coming around to the idea of learning sleights by DVD, and especially rubber band magic!!
When I first got into magic there was nothing like what's around today, and even when video first came out they were far more expensive than books and only contained a few effects, so we are lucky and should embrace technology! I would never sell my copy of The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings though lol! Gary.

Yeah, I agree that video is a better medium in some situations. When magic involves complex sequences, or moves difficult to describe in print, then it can be a real benefit. I'm a big fan of enhanced ebooks which seamlessly integrate images, audio, and video, e.g. the books created by inkling.com/. Quote:

I've got Shock twist with the written instructions and it's great. If you like this trick you should check out Gary's other trick Ambitious Jazz. That's fantastic too.

The text is peppered with mistakes, typos, and ambiguous language in places, courtesy of author Mike Maxwell. This despite the fact that it has been reprinted over the years and there was plenty of opportunity to rectify everything in editions beyond the first. That sort of laziness in editing can be very frustrating to students who don't know enough yet to fill in the blanks or make corrections as they work through the material.

Bob Jardine performed a very similar if not identical effect titled Marked Cards, in which the cards ended up with markings on the back. John Shryock sells this effect ( technicolor cards ) on his website. The four cards change backs and have the marking on them also. It is an awesome effect and one I have used in every closeup performance since I saw John perform it years ago. I always assumed it was a Bob Jardine effect.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how similiar this is to John Bannon's Spin Doctor routine. Watch the video and correct me if I am wrong here:
Link: Spin Doctor by John Bannon To me, the only real difference (aside from the patter) is that in John's routine, he ends CLEAN by incorporating the "magic" card into the hands of the spectator. (Trying to say this without giving too much away). I much prefer John's routine for that reason. Everything else looks the same to me (cards turning face up, E**s**y counts, and card backs changing into something different. But being able to end clean with all cards inspectable goes a long way for me.

You can end clean with mine if you want to, you can put a card into your pocket and make it jump back to your hand ;-)
Just to reiterate, the shows on my version of this are done one handed and not through any sleight, I'm not claiming mine is any better or worse than all the other versions out there, this has been with me for many years and has served me well! Gary.

Great packet effect. I enjoy performing "Rainbow Cascade," which is made by Davenport's and based on Roy Walton's "Cascade," and noticed several similarities before picking up Shock Twist. But there are also some important differences, such as the one-handed displays that Gary Jones already mentioned. A few fundamental parts of the method are different, too. Nonetheless, the overall handling looks pretty similar and I'd never perform both for one group. Shock Twist is reset and ready to go again at the end of the effect, whereas "Rainbow Cascade" requires a bit of a reset.

The twisting phase, the base for my routine is the method devised by Derek Dingle, which is in his book published in the early 1980s, all the routines out there which are similar to mine all use his twisting sequence phase. I'm not sure if Dingle had this published earlier in a magazine but I clearly remember reading it in his The Complete Works of Derek Dingle, I don't have the book now but the effect was called (I think) We'll Twist, I just made it less difficult and added something to make this possible, plus I wanted the effect to start and end ready to go and reset. My earlier versions had large Xs on the backs along with the backs changing from blue to red, these were produced in Fox Lake cards, when different coloured bikes became more widely available the rainbow backs were used. Over the years I have seen many versions of this effect on the market, some exactly the same as Derek Dingle's original, so there has been quite a bit of independent creation going on. Thank you for taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary.

One of the best and easiest packet trick I ever had.
I you can do an E...... C.... , you're good to go ! Carry it everywhere ! The effect is incredibly simple and VISUAL... Just the way magic should be! Four blue backed cards are shown and one by one they turn face up, then with a snap of the fingers the backs change to multi coloured. Incredibly visual & stunning. Very easy to do, Instantly reset! This is one you just have to have... I promise you you wont regret it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbSiXSctbCM |
