Found it really interesting to visit this site Newseum which has TODAYS front pagews from newspapers all over the world. While TV News screams the disaster decending upon us and the Fear factor level is up and broadcast on talk radio the newspapers seem strangly NORMAL. I'm not saying the headlines aren't there...just that my random sampling didn't show any. I looked at Alabama...Los Angeles...Anchorage...and many others inclusinf some in Europe etc...Sports...local politics...View Master... I found very little panic inducing stuff or even reportage on it... Not commenting one way or the other but just found it curious that if all is so dire....well? Where's the beef?? Sety the page to show ALL for the best look at the pages. Pretty cool site.

TV news exists in a medium where it's completely surrounded by entertainment programming.
Much like the kid who hangs around the 'bad' crowd and becomes influenced I think TV news has allowed itself (over time) to be affected by the salacious programming around it. Only having an hour (or 1/2hr) to deliver the news has forced news stations to choose what they think is important. Then they make it worse by only focusing on those handful of stories instead of giving a more balanced broadcast (reporting on other issues). So the viewers are then left with the impression that these stories are more important than they really are because they are reported on all day, everyday. Print offers a better picture of what's happening in the world; more selection. You're holding the newspaper so you can decide what's important. TV just rams the same 6-8 news stories down your throat and essentially tells you "THIS is what's important for you to know". |

So far as the newspapers go, I can see how it would not be front page news for the local newspapers. Their front page emphasis is usually on local news, after all.
Ditto, this is not front page news fodder for the tabloid style of newspaper, which lean towards scandal, celebrity, and entertainment news for their front pages. But if you look at the major national and international newspapers, and the more serious newspapers not the tabloids, the financial crisis still seems to be front page news. The ones I checked all mentioned it on their front pages (e.g., NYTimes, Die Welt (Germany), National Post (Canada), Der Standard (Austria), Irish Times, The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)).
