You do not need to be a great vent to entertain. If you can put life into your puppet and make him seem real. that's what counts

I'm sure this thread all boils down to the quality of the performer, not the question of exposure. Some entertainers (such as myself) choose to use the Drawing Board for it's "intended purpose".....as a magical talking picture. I vent the voice for the board, and have invested in the Remote version to heighten the illusion.
Others may choose to use the board as a comedy prop. Tommy Tickle does so, and he's funny! He makes no attempt to make the drawing board appear particularly magical, but perhaps surprising. As soon as the kids see the picture moving, they realise that he's making it happen. But they don't care. They love what he does. Neither approach is right or wrong, but no doubt, some performers can use props like this effectively, and some can't. Surely, it's not what you do with prop, but how you do it? Potty |

I don't expose magic during my show and do not advocate it, I was hoping to make the point that entertainment is important not that we have magic powers and secrets.
Potty You are spot on! And Bud yes I am a Great Entertainer, maybe you should try to be as Great sometime. LOL Gus

Would a sloppy magician who exposes the method of his trick even though his presentation is terrific be acceptable? Although comedy is the key element to successful ventriloquism, lip control is also a vital part of the illusion. Those who have not perfected this aspect of the art will be remembered as "he was funny but he moved his lips". The top vents (Terry Fator, Jeff Dunham, Dan Horn, Jay Johnson, et al) DO NOT move their lips even when they're tired. To think that moving your lips when doing vent is acceptable does not respect the art and in my opinion is unacceptable no matter how funny or entertaining you are.

As for the lip thing, I record my own board dialogue and put in the deserved time to get the timing and memorization down cold. For a younger crowd I think you can get away with moving your lips, like many do for puppets. But for me the drawing board will always be more than a puppet. |

Another thing that is important is the type of audience. If you are not good with ventriloquism, I advise not to perform it in front of a rowdy group of kids. If you feel you have a behaved crowd, perform with it.

Just speaking for myself, I enjoy a good routine whether or not the lips move. If they have an excellent routine then I tend not to focus on the "How's" but get swept up in the characters on stage. That is speaking as a 37 year old kid.
