Anyway, as for the set, I've been looking forward to these for a long, long time. I think they were recorded 2 or 10 years ago and now L&L finallyi gets around to releasing them.

The bottom line is this - L&L shoots in the summer. Typically from May through September. In that time they will video tape more artists than they actually release through out the year. Some performers get released before others for contractual reasons or because it's just the right time for that release. So why don't they just release everything? Easy - the market wouldn't support it. L&L has always remained consistent in their release schedule. You're going to see 4 - 6 new releases a year from them. This doesn't include books, or re releases like they have now with Ammar's videos. Now if they taped 8 - 10 performers per year and had to get those out, it would double the amount of releases. L&L is smart in how they do business. If they flooded the market with their products, they would have a harder time selling because it's not just them - it's also Murphy's and the dealers. Comments like the one above imply that L&L is either too lazy to release certain artists OR they're holding back. Neither is the case. For one thing you never see L&L over-hype products for months on end. |

Point taken. It does seem like 10 years ago that I heard about a clever Max Maven
dvd being recorded though. It was probabally more like 5 years ago. It was on verbal forcing I believe. Maybe it will never come out!

And one more point - sometimes it's not up to L&L and the performer is the one who causes, what seems to be, a delay. But to call it a delay makes it sound negative. What I've heard about the latest Max Maven project is that it's in his hands and not L&L's.
The way I understand it, it's a collaborative effort between L&L and the performer. L&L sends the performer videos of the shoot - basically a rough cut. It's up to the performer to review everything, make notes and get it back to L&L. Sometimes it happens right away, but sometimes it can take months. Again, not L&L's fault, and to call it a "fault" sounds negative. Most of these guys are working pros and it's a tremendous effort to review all the material and put your stamp of approval on it. |

Perhaps I came off as sounding too harsh. We have been waiting a long time for these DVDs. As for flooding the market -- it makes sense. I'm not sure if L&L lives up to its strategy, but it makes sense (just like spreading twenty tricks across three DVDs makes financial sense).
But who is on the cover of my new Spring L&L catalog? Bill Malone. I love the guy. Why do they release two card DVDs around this time? Hell, isn't Armstrong a Malone protege?

I heard that Jon's Out of This Blah is based on some thing Andi Gladwin has done. Does any one know where that routine may be written up/published?

"Jon's" routine is a presentation and handling touch on something I showed him. It is based on a Martin Gardner idea which first appeared in Epilogue.

Why the resentment about waiting? It's not like you paid for these discs and are waiting?

One of the effects on Vol. 1, called "Personal Organizer," is, IMO, one of the most jaw-dropping card routines of all time. It owes a huge debt to Lennart Green (as Armstrong acknowledges), both in the underlying effect and the presentation, but Jon adds his twists and brings his own personality. Don't want to spoil the effect by saying what it is - it's one of those where it's best to go into the performance blind. But man, THAT'S magic!
Now appearing nightly in my basement.
