I am shure it could be found if I knew the name of the material. I am wanting to make a pile of gold coins that will compress into a load tray. also any sugjestions on ataching plastic coins to the foam? Thanks, Gimpy

I'm not sure exactly how you plan to use the foam, but I'll speculate and give you an idea...
If your intent is to carve/sculpt the foam into a rough shape and then stick coins all over it as a facde to represent a pile of gold coins without it actually being so, then you might do just as well to buy regular blocks of foam from a fabric shop. I doubt you'll find it as soft as sponge ball foam, but get the least dense foam availbale. you can carve the shape and then pick away the underside to hollow it. That way, it would compress more. Regarding color, a light spray of gold paint would color the foam. If coins are to be attached all over this, it would seem that you just want to be sure gold color shows through the gaps. Test on a scrap to be sure the solvents don't eat the foam. Gold paint may also be available in water-based, or made for plastics. Just thinking here. Another option might be to use a spray adhesive designed for foam, and then dust it with gold glitter. Use something like Stick n' Seal, or Amazing Goop to attach the coins. These adhesives are designed to hold anything to anything, and stay a bit flexible when cured.

Open cell foam (technical/trade name) is what you are looking for. This is like the foam that is used in some tool cases, die cut into cubes that can be picked out to customize for approximate shape of individual items.

Michael,
those are some great tips, thanks. To be more specific, what I plan is to load this pile into the lid of a box about 1.5"deep 6" W x10" L space and have the load drop into the top of the box. When the lid opens the foam expands into the shape of a pile of gold, should look like the whole box is filled with booty. Thought you could also add some loose coins so they slide off the pile as you open the box.Maybe even introduce some additional coins after the box was opened. This would only be a small part of the effect.kinda like when the large ball comes out in a chop cup routine Thanks, Gimpy

Maybe the pile of gold could be attached to a flap, similar to a card box. This would be secured in the top. Once the box lid is closed, the flap (load) would drop down resting on a lip near the top. This would reduce the size of the load to whatever sticks up over the top of the box. If you need a diagram, let me know.
