I, too, have recently been pondering the word 'psychic.' As a palm reader, tarot reader, etc. . . one of the first questions I often get in casual conversation is 'Are you psychic?'

I have had difficulty, at times, answering that, as it is such a subjective word that I have no idea what they mean. Some folks, from different cultures, will expect that I will instantly call forth the spirit of their long gone relative to find out where the money was hidden. (Really!)
Some will expect that I will be able to visualize - and describe - the height, weight, hair color and bank account of their next lover. (And the exact date they will meet!)

One thing that is clear to me is that the person asking the question is hoping that I will say 'yes.' They want me to be something 'woo-woo' and strange!

Certainly, I think I can convince them that I can do some quite different and rare things, but I still feel awkward with that label.

I've tried a number of approaches. I have said something that sounds very much like Mr. Quinn's response, but to my own ears I start sounding a bit 'over explaining' and nerdish!
Currently, I say something like. "Yes, I probably am; I certainly am 'something!' It depends on what you mean by 'psychic,' of course; different people mean different things. Perhaps we can try a small experiment and see what you think . . ."

I have also answered, "Yes . . . some." That gives them the yes that they want, but limits it in a nonspecific way. Then what I do thereafter will define more exactly what I 'am.'

I hope to hear some more responses from others as to how you answer this loaded question!

Thanks everyone....

its proven to be a worthwhile discussion - who'd have thought it eh! No one has even provoked a tinsy tiny argument yet...Davit?Kriskrase? Where art thou?

any more, for any more?

I think the word "psychic" is a dirty word in some quarters - and I would like to re-claim it a little in a positive way...

My style was a hybrid of two things directly from my past (long story so I wont bore you) - but, as comfortable as I am/was with it - and it all worked well, I still didn't feel it quite fit me completely...

but at least when I told my mini back story (one side of the family east end tarot readers, other side rum smugglers from the isle of wight) I was basing it on a partial truth...

but I think I was using it as a shield a little, as in, I was using that basis as my backstory - but not really including as much of "me" as I felt I should...by that, I don't mean egotistically, I mean as everything I do, I want to be a reflection of "me", rather than "them"....that make sense?

so it was more of a display thing, rather than a true extention of me...

I don't think I'm explaining myself too well to be honest...so I'll stop! haha

its going slowly, but I'm enjoying it - I'm revisiting old ideas, turning them into new ones, I even retired my first copy of annemanns PME, and bought myself a new copy to work through and make notes on..the old one is tattered and falling to bits...

something silly, but also something I wanted to have...now theres a smoking ban over in the UK, theres no ashtrays in bars...so I tracked down a small brass indian finger bowl, with peacock carvings on the outer edging, its a nice size for dumping and using to collect papers in for my close-up stuff...

I just wanted something visually appealling, a small thing to use, that is nice and tactile, and still lets me cheat every now and again...and again, it fits in with what I want to represent...

my new beard is being cut into a new shape tomorrow!

oh, and as my other job, its design based (i used to be a silk screen printer years ago, as well as an illustrator) - I'm working on incorporating more of that into what I do too...so stuff like the phantom artist I'm pulling apart and rebuilding, as well as a few other ideas...one being a mixture of automatic sketching - instead of writing...

bet you wish you hadnt asked now!

This has been a great topic. I started getting into mentalism about 5 years ago. It's only now I'm beginning to recognise effects, routines and styles that I feel comfortable with, that are 'me'. Paul Brook's book 'The Alchemical Tools' has been a great help in separating the wheat from the chaff. It's caused me to re-evaluate a lot of what I do. I have no problem with where you are going with this Iain. It sounds like you have achieved a very comfortable mental/psychic balance. It's great when you perform material that feels absolutely right. All the best with your journey of rediscovery.

yes..."psychic"....

I define what psychic means

...recently, I was doing a couple of readings in a pub in London, using a mix of Enrique's work, and a different presentation than I normally do (the way I like doing it is linked with art galleries, due to my arty background)...and together, myself and this woman explored her character - and I accepted no feedback during, no near misses, no CR...

we just had fun, and talked for half an hour...she rated it at 85%, kept all my doodlings as we went along, and said she'd bring her friends to come see me soon....

I really enjoyed it - and..dunno...just felt right...

honestly, and in good faith,

So specifically,

How do you define "psychic" at this point in your character development?

Do you place yourself in that category to the sitter? and

How, if at all, do you distinguish yourself from the Sylvia Brownes and John Edwards of "psychic" fame/notoriety?

The big difference arnon is, that they are mediums...and talk to the dead...

I do not...

I entertain the thought of what psychic can mean, and that meaning within my definition of the word "mental prowess/untapped potential of the human mind"...

as stated, I do not,nor will not talk to the folk in summerland...thats for other folk to do, if they wish to, or are able to...

Ian, this is something that I have toyed with by creating what I call a "claimer" rather than a disclaimer.

The idea is to tell audiences that what they are about to experience: Psychic phenomenon. Although the performer makes no claim of mediumistic powers, everything that they are seeing is the result of the performer innate and conditioned natural abilities. No hidden assistants, cameras or microphones will be used in the performance.

That's my rough idea.

...and what is that meaning? Is it something beyond what science recognizes? Is its source something spiritual?

Don't quite know yet, as I say - its all a work in progress!

its certainly NOT the hollywood definition of what psychic means...im aiming for intense, unusual, entertaining and thought-provoking...

as I say arnon - its a fresh start....not sure where I'll end up yet, still experimental/drawing board stages...

what is the potential for the human mind? do we know? will we ever? what if we COULD do x,y,z?

I should say, that to me, the hollywood explanation of psychic seems to be a "one size fits all" description...medium/claraudient/soothsayer all in one...

psychic could mean someone who has supreme mental focus, naturally...

or, it could be that the electric "spark" within our brains, could work on frequencies - and we can tune into other peoples if we practice enough? and therefore could tune into thoughts too?

its more about making sense of the routines and performance for me...a quick example is I could ask 3 people create a fake signature for themselves, and use a fake name...i could summise who wrote what whilst blindfolded...i could then tell one that I'm most in tune with, what fake name they chose...and then replicate the fake signature...

how am I doing that? if it was psychologically based, I could think of some reasons - if its by some other means, then I want a comfortable "geist" or framework that I want to work within - definition/creation afterall...so right now, its about me defining things clearly that genuinely add substance to whatever I perform...

Sounds like you would be presenting yourself as an "empath" - able to feel what others feel. You might want to expand the revelation with a description of the "feelings of fraudulence" experienced by the participant who penned the fake signature, and how it came about that they chose that false name, and perhaps why it evokes attitudes or values antipathetic to them.

I commend you Iain. You have the desire to connect with your deepest rooted feelings, and share them....that's as real as it gets.

Many of my Mystery Entertainment presentations reflect my profound interest in Ancient History...that is where my heart is...while I am not performing. So incorporating the timeless 'Mystery of the Human Mind' fits me nicely.

Your statement:"What is the potential of the human mind?"...Is compelling. In fact,it is similar to something I use in my introductory statements.

This is an important and interesting thread. All the best.

Iain, this man might spark something ... or maybe not, but here it is nonetheless:

In his recent documentary Max Maven was asked:

INTERVIEWER: "A lot of people who have seen your show, come out thinking that what you do is real, that you could read minds, so how do you respond to that?"

MAX MAVEN: Your question presumes that I can't.

And when approached with "Some have a school of thought that the truly generous attitude towards your audience is letting them know that this is all fraudulent and a trick so they are never lead to believe that this guy is really a mind reader."

Max responded: "On this subject of believability, I don't care what the audience decides to define what I'm doing as being."

"Knowing is a wonderful thing ... so is not knowing."

For the record, I agree with Max here 100%. I don't believe in disclaimers at all, I don't believe in insulting my audience's intelligence by destroying the mystery many of them pay to enjoy. It's like going to a horror movie and watching it with the lights on. No fun. If people want to research further after a mysterious performance they can ask a teacher, visit the internet, a library, the JREF, whatever, they don't need me to "keep the lights on while they watch a horror movie" so to speak.

Thanks all so far guys...

this does make a change eh? rather than arguing over prices, youtube links to exposers and generally bating one another...

a nice and peaceful thread, and all of us discussing things...

I've not put any time limits on this - I'm just reasearching more, testing out ideas and presentations...and keeping extensive notes...
