This an excellent source. You will use it to learn and return to over the years when you forget something you don't use for awhile. Daryl is an outstanding teacher.

I have found this to be invaluable resource. I use it regularly. If you have it around I suspect you'll use it a lot too. Perhaps you already do? If not I would encourage you to purchase it.

Excellent resource. Can't be beat. It can be a bit boring to learn from, but for a reference, absolutely the best.

I'm a big fan. Great selection of material, and I always enjoy Daryl's performance/teaching style. I collected the series, one at a time, over a fairly long stretch of time and by the time I reached the end I wondered what had taken me so long. The answer: it's a heck of a lot of material to work your way through.

These are the first DVD's I ever bought, and I've never regretted it. Great resource!

I really REALLY wanted this set when I first started out but I never took the plunge because I wasn't sure if it would be good for a total beginner. The price is heavy for the whole set and the amount of material is intimidating to say the least.
Now, I feel as if I have learned a decent chunk of the material from other sources, 1/4 if I am lucky, would it still be a great investment to pick it up? The voices in my head keep screaming at me to buy this but I am slowing growing used to the idea that you don't need a move if you don't have an application. I feel kind of like I am in limbo. I feel like it would be great "brain food." Say I have an idea for an effect but I don't know the means to the end. Maybe a packet switch, color change, etc for example. Would this help me on my way? I'm sorry if it seems like I am hijacking the thread but I think it's a relevant question. JS |

It's still a great investment. Daryl's a wiz when it comes to cards. And of course, watching an expert actually perform the moves makes it way easier to learn.
I'd say you'd need about five years of constant practice before you could do everything on the set well (Ok, so I'D need five years, at least)

Found my set cheap on one of the forms Magic Café or Genii try putting up a WTB on the sites. I felt a lot like you about doing sleights for sleights sake.
But as I got more involved I need to see how some different sleights were done and The DVD's paided off. Also try Magic Warehouse used DVD's section. Also EBay Best Leo Jr |

Thanks for the tips Leo, I will try those places.
Yes, knowing a load of sleights IMO is a very good thing, some sleights may be better for the job then others. For example instead of doing a 4 for 4 switch to controll the aces to the top in a gambling routine... Maybe doing a multiple shift is better for the routine because you can cleanly show the aces and such... Thanks guys. |

For a total beginner, there is so much technique in Daryl's superb encyclopedia that he would stop at some point and would learn more from the first two DVDs than from the two last ones.
My suggestion to a beginner would be to buy R Paul Wilson's version of The Royal Road to Card Magic DVD and Daryl's Encyclopedia DVD. After each trick then try to find alternatives to the move suggested by Jean Hugard and brilliantly demonstrated by R Paul Wilson (one of the best world's cardmen and a native of this beloved Scotland who gave us so many superb magicians with names like John Ramsay, Pat Page...) This is made possible by the very good table of content printed on the back of the DVD boxes of Dary'ls Encyclopedia Of Card Magic.
