For the people that do this regularly, how much work and time is involved in the setup once you got it down? After researching it, it looks like a lot of work to me. Do you have to unwind and rewind the sprial bound each time?
Thanks. Jim

Yes, and a little more than just that. I got it down to about 1 minute, if you got all the supplies ready and prepped as much as you can.

I have the old version and now can't get refills for it so either I make my own or fork out again for the new version. Great prop though, it's more a reset at home than between shows!

Okay, but how do you handle multiple shows in a day? Say I've got three shows in a day. Maybe I would make up three seperate pads that are always ready to go? How do others do this? Thanks.

You can prep part of it at home, so in between shows to finish things up, you need some flat area to work, I use the back seat of my van (so not much), and just have some scotch tape handy. yes you have to un spiral and re-spiral, but the more you do this, the faster you get, and you just pick up a few nuances along the way to make it smoother and quicker... the new "signature pad" uses a bigger spiral, with not as many holes, and the cover of the sketch pad is a heavier material, this is a vast improvement and makes the whole process easier. It is not currently in my show, but one summer I did it at all my school age shows, which meant up to 4 times a day, for a total of around 125 times over the summer,I had already been doing it occasionally at some bdays, so I had already gained adeptness at resetting it, if I had not previously learned, I would have been in trouble that summer, cuz for a while it would take me up to 10 minutes to try to re-set it at home, laid all out over the kitchen table. But if some prep work is done ahead of time (I usually prep about 12 at a time) at home, I can reset the thing in my car in less than a minute.

I have been doing this trick since I learned it in the linking ring in the early 80's. I make my own pads as you may have seen me do at the castle. I think making your own is much better than buying the already made one. The one you make will look like your drawings and handwriting. And yes make 5 or 6 of them and simply just make them up on friday for the weekend shows. This is by far my favorite trick. You simple know how the crowd will re-act to the routine when it happens. Thanks, everyone. Ken, I love your presentation of this trick. So you're saying you make 5 or 6 complete seperate pads that are ready to go? Just want to make sure.
I think it's a perfect stand up routine for kids and adults. Jim

Also use the multiple pad approach. On a series of shows for a county on Maryland's Eastern Shore, I had a librarian escort who attended each show. At the sixth and last show of the series, I switched the force card. The little girl showed the audience her choice, and I watched the librarian's face go from 'huh?' to 'uh-oh!' and finally on to 'how-the-hell?!'
Also added version with Halloween flashcards so that a ghost can rise from behind a tombstone and a top hat version with magic flashcards and a rabbit popping up holding a banner reading "Got Carrots?" |
