I feel guilty. I showed Mom the Barry and Stuart ESP test (the link for which was posted here a few days ago). I never told her it wasn't real. I feel I've betrayed her a little by keeping a secret from her. But it's such a good one! Gotta love Mom.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

Generally, if I perform for family it is for my mother and father first. Mainly because my mother is good at telling me if she likes it or not, and because my father is good for gauging how strong of an effect it is. Believe it or not there is a difference there for me. My mother will mainly tell me if I flash, or if I looked like I messed up somewhere. My father will tell me if it sucked (not outright, but through his reaction of course).
So I do perform for them, but not often. I like to test out my stuff for real people that either don't know I perform magic, or don't see it too often out of me. That way I can guarantee honest reactions even though I tend to get quite honest reactions from my parents. |

I was suprised to find my family was the most impressed when I learned memory techniques. Lke the old old 20 different items that can be recalled by number then the whole list repeated backwards.
They really thought there must be a gimmick. It is a shame memory systems are not taught in school, they are handy in everyday life. Then again, if they were, this "trick" would not be very impressive. |

I find that my wife is a great person to perform for. She still enjoys watching magic, whether it is mine or someone else's. Also, she is very honest with me if she sees something go wrong, or if she isn't impressed with an effect. She gives me feedback on why something didn't work or wasn't effective. I can take that information, rework and redress the trick, and a few weeks later I can present it again and I can floor her (sometimes), or it's back to the old drawing board.
It is a much different feedback from what I get from my fellow magic club members. They can give me great feedback on technique and presentation, but they also generally know the method. My wife doesn't know the method, so if I change the presentation enough, I can still make the trick work. Otherwise, I move on to something else. Family members can be helpful. Just be careful not to burn them out on magic. |

My two brothers Ren and Stimpy hate what I do. Unlike those pesky Rugrats. My two mates Bill and Ben seem to enjoy it yet our local Count Duckula despises it. The world don't move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you may not be right for some. My uncle Optimus Prime seems to belive in psychic ability. Splinter my rat doesn't even understand it! I showed some effects to my postman Pat. He seemed to be very impressed. Although his stupid cat just hissed at me! Mr Ben who I bumped into the other day was flabbergasted! Yet my friend Sniryl Sneer is sceptical. Everyone are like Transformers. More than meets the eye. My girlfriend Patty Mayonese likes it but I think she is leading me on. Thomas the Tankengine driver doesn't have time to see any but I bet he would be impressed! Each to their own so my trusty companion Penfold would say. Real people give real reactions. Next time you see a Mr Happy in the street, try something! Just watch out for those pesky Power Rangers. They really get on my tits!
