With all the negative posts that have been going on lately here in the rooms I thought it might be nice to post something positive about the online forums:
Katalina and I met Mick Ayres through the on line forums and developed a fun friendship. We conversed many times through E-mails and Phone conversations but had never met. Finally, we were able to swing by while on a small break from our tour and spend three days with Mick. First, Mick is the epitome of the Southern Gentleman. He was so very nice and gracious during our stay at Hilton Head. We also had the fantastic opportunity to watch him perform twice at his resort. I can honestly say that he held his guests in rapt attention and they absolutely love him. His skill at weaving a story that snares the minds of the audience and leads them to any emotion Mick paints on the canvas is scary. One of the aspects that really stood out is how he has developed a solid character around his performances. He has developed a very through back story for his character that is absolutely believable. We watched as guests at the resort would ask him questions and in his answers Mick would connect his character to fantastic answers that not only satisfied the questions of the guest but entertained them as well. He was always in character and worked like a skilled carpenter to always build a perfect piece of entertainment when approached by people at the resort. Mick took us to a couple of local eating establishments where we got to swap stories, lies, and trade some performing ideas. Mick is dangerous with a deck of cards and showed us some extreme card handling moves, of the ones that I can remember; I will have fun working on them in the next few months. Mick is also an expert on the local history, folktales, and quirks of the area. He can rip out a story have you leaning forward in your chair with anticipation before you know it. I can say that as Katalina and I left the area, we had a great time and feel a little inspired by hanging out with another skilled entertainer. It is one thing to exchange ideas on the forums or over the phone, but when you get to watch another performer in his element, share some good food, and great company you gain something that can only be understood by experiencing the moment. Many performers rely on the forums as their only connection to the magic community. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to be said about these forums but when you make the extra effort to go see and meet in person some of these professionals you will learn things that cannot be taught through the electrons of the computer screen. The beauty of the forums of a chance to get an introduction to some of the performers but I would suggest that you follow up and actually meet and watch some of these guys in action. Getting to watch Mick was a sweet treat for my wife and me.

Thanks for the kind words, Christian. It was a treat to meet you and Katalina, too! Thank you both for taking the time out of your tour to visit the islands.
As you mentioned, I am one of those performers who use internet forums to connect to the magic community. The nature of my performance schedule obligates my weekends to my client. On the plus side, I am on stage far more than the average bear. However, on the down side I do not lecture or attend magic conventions much...so rubbing elbows with other performers is a rare opportunity. Long ago, when I was a serious hobbyist/amateur, I would travel great distances out of my way to visit or watch a conjuror performer. Here's a question for us to consider: Has the massive availability of magic videos and 24/7 discussions on the internet forums has replaced that willingness or 'need' in conjurors? Warm regards, Mick Ayres
