I was into magic for about 15 years before I came up with something half way decent and original.
My advice to anyone who puts thought into this. Don't worry about inventing. Just let it happen. Some day an idea will just come to you. Not all of them will be good ones though. Some of mine have turned out terrible. But when an idea comes try it out no matter how silly it might seem. You just never know. Most of the tricks I've come up with came to me when I was just playing around. Kind of like a kid with their building blocks and erector set. Just to give you an idea. I made my first outsmokin gimmick when I was just playing around. It wasn't till months later that I happened to put it in my mouth in front of a mirror and noticed it can be used for more then I was thinking when I first made it. If that didn't happen then that trick never would have entered my mind. Another thing that happens is this. After you've been into magic for a while and have a lot of knowledge of different methods. You'll be able to think of something you'd "like" to be able to do. You'll be more likely to work that idea out if you have a lot of knowledge and experience to present options. Ron Jaxon |

If you spend years learning "every sleight" ever created to date you will never have time to find what is best for you -- which can come from looking at an object and asking, "how can I use that in a magical way." It is like learning to write (as in stroies and peoms.) Reading about writing is not "writing". Reading the creative works of others is not "writing." Only "writing" is "writing." So, write something every day. You don't have to show it to anyone -- just do it. In the same way you can "create" soemthing ever day with regards to you magic performance -- a new Patter line, a new hidden pocket in your vest, using a coin sleight with a walnut. Just do it. Don't ever be limited by what "came before." Don't worry about "inventing." -- focus on Creating.
