I just happened to order some magician's wax (destined to IT trikcs), and I found it very hard.
I thought it would we softer, did any of you ever get that same idea when discovering this for the first time ? Or should I change my supplier ? |

Wht brand did you get?
I've started using 3m brand blue tack (which is actually gray). It can be bought at most any office supply store. It's much softer and cheaper. |

Hello from across the pond!
There are many, many different "softnesses" of magician's wax. You might have to experiment some to find what works for you. Maybe you can buy a toilet bowl wax ring and mix a small amount of this with what you have. Ron Jaxon doesn't even recommend wax, he says use adhesive such as thumb tacks or sticky tack. This is a blue (or white or yellow) removable adhesive sold here in the states for posting tempory art or other items. It's not affected by temperature. Jim |

Chakkan, all may not be lost. Take a small piece of the Wax and knead it between your thumb and the fingertips. The warmth of your fingers should soften the consistency abit.

Chakkan,
While we're on the subject, there are much cheaper options out there than "official" dealer branded magicians wax. Wax toilet seals can be picked up for a few dollars at the hardware store and provide enough of the "hard" wax to last nearly forever. Poster adhesives (like FunTak or the 3M stuff Mario mentioned) found at any office supply can be used for "soft" waxes. I use some bargain basement brand that is several wax sticks in a box. It's super soft (to the point it can occasionally be hard to remove), so it's not great for IT work...but excellent for cards, coins, and being used to steal items.

Essentially you have two types of Magician's Wax: Hard and Soft. The soft is for such things as Card on Ceiling, sticking cards together, etc.
Hard is for anchoring things. It has to be hard so that the thread does not pull through it. Yep, your was IS hard, but as you knead it a little it will soften enough for you to encase the end of the thread, etc. Also, being hard it will be easier to move from one place to another and yet stick quite nicely, etc. Best,

Magician`s wax is not always that easy to handle. I have four types myself: Hard wax, Soft wax, Putty, Derma Wax.
Although I use Ammar`s Putty now, I have always found rather comfortable with hard wax, since if you scoop up a little bit it will easily become softer, and it sticks rather well to your body. Before that I tried Derma Wax for a while, which is wax actually used for creating fake wounds in the make up branche. It is really sticky, but it is completely invisible because it is made to look exactly like skin. Soft was was never really used by myself, until I discovered that it is really meant for cards.

Wow, so many subtleties for a piece of wax.
We're not only magicians, we're alchimists altogether. Thank you all. |

Hey, I just tamed the wax - not a big exploit I know - main thing is to use as few as possible, and even a hard wax remains malleable.

Add candle adhesive such as Mr. Mole's Sticky Wax to the list of possible alternatives.

Anyone suggest a good source for hard wax?
