Okay I don't know if this is the right place to discuss this but Im going to give it a shot. I have found a way to extract small pieces of data about a person using such networking tools such as facebook. I have concluded that I could pull off some feats of mentalism and other psychologic happening by using facebook as a tool. I could give someone a call and leave them wondering how I got their number, I could get their date of birth, their martial status, their emial address. There is a part of me that says this is okay and there is a part of me that says its unethical. This is however legal since facebook/myspace members can put up such information for the general public. What is your thoughts on this and have you done it? was it successful?

This is one of those areas where if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't. In this day and age many might consider it stalking. Even if they put their information out there for public viewing I would consider it unethical to exploit that. Legality should not be our only guide for morality.

I'm not sure there is anything wrong with it ethically (information gathering is Facebook's whole purporse) but I think it could easily be backtracked.

I am not sure it is "unethical". I am just not sure it is worth the trouble.
Plus if the info is up on the web and they know it, what would be the big deal?

Oh, and don't forget that some people don't use their real information on those sites. I, for one, never use my real birth date. Too much identity theft to leave tidbits of info about yourself all over the internet.

If it is public information, it's fair game. In the old days people were much less scrupulous about information gathering. Getting information from ticket receipts, calling employers claiming to be a relative to extract details, TONS of things that blew people away. Is it "ethical"? I'm not sure. That has to do with your morality. I consider myself a very moral person, but would I cheat a little to get information to blow someone away with an effect? If it wasn't illegal, probably so. I sure don't think researching people on facebook is wrong. Companies are doing that now for prospective employees! I say the box is empty when it's not so we know that we sometimes lie for an effect.
For me... ethics all depends on intent. If my sincere intent is to create an effect to mystify and amaze, then it's ok. If I did the same things for another reason, the same thing might be wrong or creepy (lol... see: stalking).

How do you intend to use it? If you are selling the idea of a seance, for example, you are using information that is available to pose for ESP. If you are using it for an "illusion" it is a totally different situation...
