You're right about all those smiles. I'm usually torn regarding circus animals. I've only seen negative media coverage. But those guys looked healthy and smiley.

Media tends to only cover the FEW disgruntled wackos.
I was around those elephants ALL day and some evening. Not ONCE were they even touched (except to pet the trunk or for the ride saddle of course.) All are given just quiet voice commands. Even I was able to get them to do things with simple speech...'Move back'...'Step forward'...'Up trunk' etc. They aren't even tied down! They are loose to walk around with just a little piece of string letting them know their boundary. They are pretty comfortable and un stressed. You have to see the act to believe it. The Trainer is on the run to keep up with them (no hooks or touching)as they race through their stuff...great fun. You can see them get excited just before show time with some blowing through the trunks and a hieghtened awareness waiting for the 'word'. The little Hippo is a kick. She comes up and if you move your hand or make a sound she opens her mouth and clicks her toungue. Not to get food mind you. She has her 'pond' that she's in and out of. The Ponys all respond to voice commands and QUITE statements. Quite remarkable and eye opening.

Just like people, smart animals like to learn new things and have something fun to do, as long as they're treated well. A little lovin' goes a long way to making them happy, too. Are there bad circuses and pet owners out there? Yes, or course. Tha'ts why we have the SPCA. But that doesn't mean that circuses and owning pets are bad things in their own right.
