Title: Got a Light? By Matt Wayne
Medium: Routine, DVD instructions with props EXCEPT shot glasses Arena: Bar, table, parlor Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Got a Light? is a routine that is based on the shell game that uses shot glasses and rather than a pea LED lights are used. I watched Matt do his routine a couple times and dang if I couldn’t catch him doing anything, in fact I couldn’t figure out how he would do some of the standard moves with an LED light, which is a little dome with two long leads sticking off of it. The routine is entertaining and clearly something done for the public but still I didn’t see how he could be doing the switches that were obviously happening. When I saw the explanation I was shocked because I worked for a period of time at a company that used LED lights like this by the tens of thousands and I never realized they had the properties used for his evil deed by Matt. If you have not figured it out by now you show three shot glasses and under two are red LEDs and under the third a green LED. You move the shot glasses around and the spectator thinks they know where the green one is and you show they are wrong and that the green LED is under another shot glass. They can hold the shot glass in their hands and the switch still takes place. You gotta see this to believe how simple it is. I don’t want to tip anything so I’ll just say this is a very creative idea and my hat is off to this young fellow for coming up with it. It is simple to do and unless you run into the rare person who knows all about LEDs you will blow this past the spectators. It is a cool trick. The DVD is beautifully done, good equipment is used, the sound is great, no messing around. I have only one issue and that is where to perform this routine. The bar is the perfect place, a small stand up show with a tilted table so people can see what you are up to would be great. I am a member of the club that doesn’t like to work on the table top when doing table work at restaurants. This routine may change my mind because it is so much fun. I did it at the bar in a casino and LEDs are all over the place so my patter took that into account. All around a fun little routine. Maybe not earth shaking but certainly creative and I think the spectator will enjoy it. You get the DVD along with the LEDs and a battery to light them up. (note: If anyone knows Matt have him contact me for a lil’ tip I have for him concerning this effect, thank you). |

Hi Santa, thanks for posting your thoughts on Got a Light. As the debut DVD for both Matt and for the New York Magic Project, it certainly holds a special place for us!
Matt's a member here on the Café, so I'm sure he'll either post here or get in touch with you via PM. Got a Light is great for bars, to be sure, thanks to the visual nature of the LEDs. There have been a few other threads on the DVD and routine over the past few months. Some ideas that have been thrown out there include using it with a holiday theme, with the red light being Rudolph, and the green lights being elves. Definitely lots of ways to present this one. Someone (I think it was Harry Murphy) also posted with the idea of having 3 spectators involved, each holding an LED. Instead of shuffling the lights, you shuffle the spectators. This not only brings it off the table, but could turn the whole routine into a parlor/stage piece. Kevin

Hi Santa!
This is the real Matt Wayne and as per your posting, heck I figured I'd reply personally. However, I thought twice about doing so-- since I didn't get that awesome Paul Harris effect for Christmas, but I forgive. I'm responding currently on the Blackberry, so please bypass any grammar errors. I would like to recommend that you check out the official GAL thread that was started on the Café regarding my effect. You might find your tip already covered. I'm so very thrilled that you're enjoying the effect. I love hearing that!! Makes me happy to know people appreciate my routines. If you enjoy GAL, I have more unique releases in the works for this year!! Many thanks for your kind comments!! Hope you liked the chocolate chip cookies this year. Best, Matt Wayne

I have it and have never used it because I figured there was too much "stuff" going on hooking up the battery each time. If you are getting good reactions I am going to have to dig it back out and give it a try at my fav dimly lit bar.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Putting it up to the battery to light up should be covered by patter (not covered as in concealed but as in filling the void). The action only takes a second and I've not seen it detract from anything.
