Now before people start shouting "Wrong room!", hear me out.
The general effect is a card is chosen, lost in the deck, your hand is shown empty on both sides, the deck is tossed into the air and you catch the selected card. So why is this in Penny? I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and got to see Ben do this effect for a live audience. I expected to see the same old "pick a card" routine, but instead he did something different that threw me for a loop. He spread the cards in front of the spectator's eyes and asked that they mentally remember one. Then, with no questions asked, Ben tossed the deck into the catching one card in his hand with its back facing us. He asked the participant to say the card they were merely thinking of and, without any funny moves, he slowly turned around the card and it was it! Surely this was pre-***w, but I found out later that it wasn't. I was stumped! Utterly and completely stumped. I haven't been fooled like that in quite some time. I spoke with Ben about it afterwords and he told me that this version, plus 4 other variations are explained on the DVD. Curiosity got the best of me and I bought a copy. I don't want to give anything away, but I will just say that Ben has taken an old, under-utilized principle and put a fresh new spin on it. Clever little devil. If anyone is interested in a thought of card with an impacting finish, I urge you to check this one out. If the think of a card portion is as it appears on video [nothing added and nothing taken away] and if is 100% the idea seem quite useful for mentalism too

The video selection is a very, very old idea, but the "Catch" effect looks very good.

Tony... where were you?
Glad you are back! Oops! ... Apparently I'm back too! I'm beginning to hate synchronicity ... and black holes!

Paolo
I had some issues pop up over the past few months. Looks like I may have to take another short vacation, unless I can get the laptop from my son. I hope all is well with you, PM me if you can. Catch does look good, and I cannot wait to see the DVD. Tony |

Tony, hopefully you weren't speaking of THAT same very old idea I have in mind...

Tony,
You're right (Paolo, you probably are too). The idea is very old, but very effective. I like the word work that Ben uses for it. A lot of thought went into the scripting. This is what makes this thing sing and dance. -rob |

There are better "think of a card" f****s. That one is more along the lines of instant st**ging to me. Agreed, however, the catch looks nice, even in slow motion... if only you could do the slow motion one in real life!

Rob,
Ah! I knew there was a catch! (Eh! Eh!) However, while not for me, the catching of the card in mid-air is a great, visual moment!

Pearljamjeff,
I agree with you, but you really need to hear the scripting that goes along with this. It's pretty rock solid. Paolo, I hate to admit, but seeing this done live did 'catch' me off guard. Zing! -rob |

Seriously, I applaud Ben for having put out something like that.
Me, if I were to use it, I would go for a total blank deck, openly shown to audience and having HER hallucinate cards (or a card) ... the one you that you then pick in mid-air. Dozens of ways to do that, one possibility only was something put out by Marc Spelmann time ago... but other less gimmicked ways come to my mind. However, having said that, I would then go for the strict Mentalism route... but I can see how to pick the "hallucinated" card in mid-air would be great for any magician...
