Why is it I always see drummers surounded by a cage of plexi glass on t.v.? What is the purpose of this?

If you watch the Tonight Show you will notice that the drummer has a plexi glass booth surronding him. I would like to know the purpose of that booth.

Maybe, it is used to channel the sound?

The plexi glass acts like a sound buffer. It's makes it so they can hear what they are playing louder than they other instruments. It is very important because it tis the drummer that keeps the beat.

It also allows the the other instruments to be properly miked without the drums bleeding into the mix. It's technically called an acoustic isolation barrier.
