Okay, this should put EVERYONE ON NOTICE: All the time in my podcast I say "don't try this by yourself, get training from someone who already does it."
Somebody should have told this guy: "You pound 'em in FROM THE FRONT!" |

I think he was just trying to develop too many themes at the same time. And it's a morality lesson. He died.
Of course, we don't know what the audience response was. From the sound of it, I suspect it was a twisted kind of pleasure. May none of us ever know it.

I think its incredibly sad that someone got murdered, especially in this brutal way. Comparing it to a circus act is incrediblly bad taste IMHO

Welcome to our corner of the world, Lozey.
Is murder horrible? Yes. Was that a show? Absolutely. I think it's not debatable, that someone who commits murder is insane. And someone who would murder that way, was putting on a show. It may have been for himself, but I doubt it. I'd guess that he was trying to impress somebody, but probably not the victim. The victim was an example. And Lozey, I suspect we've never met. I've pounded sharp things into my nose, in almost every performance for the last 25 years. I've been wrapped in plastic, not unlike our poor victim, approximately 1800 times, only so far, I haven't been killed off. To not see a similarity...

My dad was a cop for 35 years. He had a morbid sense of humor. Most cops do. Joking about the most awful things. Dr.'s are the same way. So I guess we (the motley crew that hang here) have the same sort of humor law enforcement and surgeons. Who would have thunk?

I have an ACTUAL X-ray of a murder just like that. I also have an x-ray of a kid impaled by a fork above the eye. Yech.
Welcome Lozey aka Raven aka Lauren. You may want to change the word "embarress" to the correct spelling on your website. You might be "embaressing" yourself rather than re-assuring your audience. The sideshow (and circus) has a long history of the exhibition (and discussion) of the unusual--and that includes unusual murders and violence (e.g. Bonnie and Clyde), drug-related things and other (just pain) gruesome things (dead babies, deformities, etc., etc. etc.). I don't think Harley was "comparing" this murder to a "circus act". It is an unusual death--hence related to this forum. Furthermore, not only is this death unusual, it holds particular irony to some of the performers on this forum who perform the blockhead act. This is why it was posted by Harley.

Lt. Dobbs: Are you finished with the questioning, Callahan?
Harry Callahan: Hypothetical situation, huh? All right, I'm standing on the street corner, and Mrs. Grey there comes up and propositions me. She says if I come home with her, for $5 she'll put on an exhibition with a Shetland pony... Mrs. Grey: If this is your idea of humor, Inspector... Lt. Dobbs: All right, what are you trying to do here, Callahan? Harry Callahan: I'm just trying to find out if anybody in this room knows what the hell law is being broken, besides cruelty to animals

Few of us here, are circus acts, though quite a number of us have performed in them, in the past.
I think this is far more interesting than most circus acts. As an ex-therapist, Lozey, I'm also intrigued in the psychology of this. They didn't have classes in profiling, when I was last at university (see? I can use Brit English), but my specialty was "abnormal". Now, I want to go read this again. I want to figure out more. Actually, right now I'm working on a trophy skull. As a necessary prop, I need to do that first.

Harley, As much as I enjoy "Sideshow Acts", I would Hardly say they are more interesting than Bonafide Circus acts...The Skill level of a average Circus act is way beyond the skill of 97% or more of SS acts working today...P.S. You most likely fall into that 3%....

Second...What passes as the re-invented Bar scene Sideshow...would rarely be able to be laid down consistenly on a "Midway" today...Comparing, S.S. to Circus nowadays is apples to oranges....

I've just found the article again, in two places. One version reports 27 nails. The other, 34. Inquiring minds want to know...
Jim, you're right. Circus folk dedicate a lot more time to practice and polishing the act, than sideshow performers. Adam, when I started using the "pro lunatic" byline, almost 25 years ago, I was still working with deinstitutionalized street people. They loved it. They were also the best audience I ever had, for a straitjacket escape. Many of them had spent significant amounts of time in one, and were empowered by the fact that I could get out.

Ross, if you haven't made the pilgrimage to the Mutter Museum, you really must. They have a colon, you'd be jealous of.
Chang and Eng's liver is amazing, as is the Soap Lady. But the thing I like best, are the cabinets full of items that have been extracted from noses, ears, and stomachs. In a place with such notoriety for monstrosity, they're so simple, ordinary.
