Wow, so nice to see people planning to turn out for the lecture. And such kind words...thank you. It means a lot to both John and I, really, thank you.
But, I guess this means the lecture has to be good...Darn! Well then, I'm glad that after much mucking about with frame rates, video projectors, widescreen this..., interlaced that..., pixels and what-have-you we got the tech bug that plagued the video in our last outing all cleared-up. And the video is too now! While I'm here...with this lecture we don't want to bore everyone with what "we think" you want to know about. If there is anything you'd like us to cover about a show like this run up a post. If we can touch on it we will. Or at the very least bring it up as a question at the lecture. And for the record Grampa is much more on the green side, and he has less hair... He's also really dead. Look forward to seeing you all there, Ms.M

I suggest how to handle uncooperative Stage hands at trade shows.
Best to you both. Richard

Richard,
The answer...play the Abbott's Magic Get Together...after that, any stage crew seems easy Hi John and Morgan...sounds like a great opportunity to learn from experienced pros. Be sure you mention the pop up beach cabana. Sue and I still use ours, after the tip from you. |

Eric, I'm certainly looking forward to this special event. A rare opportunity to learn some of the insider information from the most successful theme park magic show in history!
When I try to decide whether or not a lecture or a show of any kind is really worth seeing, and encouraging friends or colleagues to attend, I ask myself "Would I drive 100 miles to see it? Would I drive 250 miles to see it?" Well, I'd drive 500 miles to catch this lecture and show by John Bundy & Morgan. These two wonderful entertainers have such a fabulous wealth of knowledge and experience -- and you never know when you might hear one or two ideas that can help transform your own show, and bring your own business to that next level of success. Even though I have seen John Bundy & Morgan perform at several magic conventions over the years, I never had the opportunity to go see the actual Spooktacular show at the theme park. Wish I had. It's a fabulous idea that they are offering a 45-minute show after the lecture. Offering this really highlights what truly dedicated professionals these two performers are. They have always believed in going the extra mile in everything they do. Their commitment to excellence consistently shines through in so many ways. Hoping John & Morgan might be available for photo op and autographs after the lecture and show! Rich |

Hey Eric,
What a terrific lecture John Bundy & Morgan gave last night. We were really glad that we drove down and attended. John and Morgan put together such a very well structured lecture. Powerpoint slides and everything. They spoke on the history of how Spooktacular started and later evolved. They provided several insider strategies on how such a massive production goes through its various planning stages. They even offered the magicians some of their own approaches for developing creativity, hiring the best team members, and handling problems that pop up during the live performances. These folks really set the bar for how a good magic lecture should be structured. We could see that they put a lot of thought into this presentation, and anticipated many questions that participants would have. No matter what type of magic you perform, whether closeup or stage, this lecture was full of ideas that can be applied to your own presentations and shows. They talked about the strategic process that is applied to everything they do, from beginning to end. It was exciting to learn how such a large scale production takes place each step of the way. The passion that John and Morgan have for theater and magic is very strong. This is clearly evidenced from beginning to end, with everything that they do. It was so amazing to learn that they paint all of those backdrops themselves. These are full size, 20 feet tall by 40 feet long, and they are absolutely breathtaking backdrops. [One of these John Bundy backdrops was used in a CSI television episode about a street magician a while ago!] They employ more than a dozen large stage illusions, and almost each and every illusion has its own backdrop. Imagine that? What an exceptional example of dedication to professionalism. John and Morgan shared so many fascinating stories. Both the good times, and the not so good times. They provided real life examples of how problems can surface at the last minute, those times when difficulties are least needed. But then they shared how contingencies were already pre-planned that allowed them to smoothly transition from one event to the next, completely unknown to the audience that some accident or snafu was even going on backstage. And if all of that were not enough to satisfy, they even showed a 45-minute video of the full Spooktacular show filmed live at the theme park. This alone was well worth the trip! Great work! Rich |

Hi Rich,
I couldn't agree more. It is a shame that many "Missed the boat" O have known John for many years and although I knew he was talented, as is Morgan, After seeing what they put into this show each year is absolutely phenomenal. What impressed me most is their ability to not only do each illusion in it's own little vignette, but each of these were intertwined into a running theme throughout the show, making for GREAT THEATER. Again, I am glad you could make the 300 plus mile round trip run, and glad you felt it was worth every minute. |

Was there any mention to make that wonderful lecture into a dvd set?
Many people would definitely benefit from that.

They want to go around presenting it and refining it further (Don't ask me how they CAN do that) before they even think of the possibility.
By all means, if you can see this lecture (John is preparing to do more of them) DON'T MISS IT! I mean, look at Rich. He traveled over 300 miles round trip for a two & 1/2 hour lecture and says it was worth every mile and every minute. For those that missed it because "It's not my thing" I just have one thing to say... With thumbs in ears and fingers wagging...Nya Nya Nya Nya Nya! This was NOT about box jumping. This WAS about turning tricks into theater and into MAGIC! If you walked in with an open mind, YOU GOT A LOT OF MATERIAL! |

Yes, definitely agree with the points you are making, Eric! No matter what your specialty of magic, you will indeed find ideas to use and implement from this lecture.
So many other lectures I have been to seem more of the type of an infomercial format, aimed only to promote the sale of their products at the end of the lecture. Now, that's fine, of course. I've been to many of these, and have enjoyed almost every single one of them. Even if I do not buy anything, I have always had a good time out for the evening, as it was always very relaxing, educational and entertaining. With this John Bundy & Morgan lecture, they aren't there to sell you anything. It is not an infomercial format. They are there to share with you the insights they have gained after more than a decade of planning, implementing and performing a very highly successful large theatrical stage show. When you take the time to learn the strategies of those who are highly successful in their niche specialties, then you get to enjoy the some of the same strong successes that they are enjoying. It is often said that if you walk away with even one idea that you can implement in your own show, then it is worth the investment of your time to attend. Eric, I think one of the greatest things I saw at this lecture is how warm, friendly and down to earth both of these lovely people are. We all have met those performers who get to a certain level of success, and then they become filled with arrogance and pride. They become full of themselves, and have no time for others. There is not even a tiny smidgen of this with these two fabulous performers. They seem to love people, and love helping people. They shared so many interesting details, and gave you a bird's eye view of everything they went up against to achieve their successes. Where others quit or gave up, these folks pushed through their obstacles and allowed their setbacks to propel them onward to even greater levels of success. Where others only dreamed of having a big large scale illusion show, they went out and made it happen. They got off their butts and took action. They went above and beyond what their bosses had expected of them. Every aspect was carefully examined and planned. Attention to detail was given to every facet of the show. One success built upon another, and their contracts were renewed year after year. As a result, they lived the life that many only dream about. It is one thing getting your foot in the door, and quite another staying there. Even when they got their big break, they did not slack off. Instead, they poured more energy and passion into it. They would spend weeks researching and planning, making the owners and managers of the theme park happier each year with a whole new show. All new routines, all new backdrops, new illusions... everything! Compare that to some of the big names in Las Vegas -- if you go back there three years in a row, you probably see the same exact show that you did last year, right? Not with Spooktacular! They went out to industry conventions, shopping for new ideas and new features that they could implement. If they could not find what they were looking for, they went about the process of creating it. I believe that John Bundy & Morgan could write a whole book about their years of experience with this show. If they did, it would probably be one of the most interesting and captivating books you'd ever read. The best part is, not only do you learn a lot, but they give you ideas on how you can go back home, and apply these insights and strategies into your own career. Rich |
