Hello,
Lots of great stuff on this thread BTW. Great suggestions of all kinds here. But I was particularly interested in Psychic Turtle's input and Lem's response. This is my take: When it comes to effects that require paper money (from a mind-power perspective), you can see them as props used to (1) mentally predict an outcome, (2) mysteriously determine their specific individual features, or (3) demonstrate mental phenomena's physical influence over them. There really isn't anything else you can do with them for the purpose of mentalism effects. BUT the fact that paper money is most ALWAYS readily available, gives you a HUGE advantage when presenting close up / impromptu deomstrations. And the fact that you can theoretically use a borrowed bill for ANY one of those three types of effects is proof of the incredible flexibilty and diversity using this as an ENVIRONMENTAL PROP. So the key to finding the effect that best suits YOU is simply to research as much as you can, and then decide which of those effects you deem worthy of adding your own creative context/input. Remember though, the bill-prop allows for THREE distinctly different mentalism effects to be experienced. Therefore, you have the flexible option to either perform one distinct effect, or any combination of two or three effects in routine sequence at any given moment that someone would have a bill to loan you to try something with. So, if you currently DON'T have an effect in your working repertoire which utiizes paper money for one of those three things, then WHY NOT determine what is a feasible context in the eyes of your persona for no other reason than to utilize the diversity of this socially-accepted environmental prop. (Cash rules everything around us. Cream! Get da money; Dolla, dolla bill y'all!) Alain Nu |

You can do a very nice bit of mentalism with a borrowed bill with the Outlaw Hideout

Does anybody have a review of Matthew Shepherds' "Big Bumper E-Book Of Serial Number Divination"?

Anything by Marc Paul or Sean Waters is guarenteed to be incredible. Their routines, along with most in mentalism, are mostly impromptu, but it depends how impromptu you want to be. I always have business cards with me and a pen. With that, I can do most of my show.
Very best wishes, Col. PS: Thanks for the mention Lem

The simplest, and because of this, the best serial number divination I've seen and used is from Bruce Kalver. It's called the Samuel Woolf Code, invented by his grandfather. It can be done across the room, by telephone or skype, with borrowed currency, credit card numbers - anything with numbers and letters. It is easy to get stunned reactions with this because it seems as if nothing is said.

I actually learned the Samuel Woolf Code at his lecture last month at Magi-Whirl in DC. I'd actually seen it exposed somewhere, can't remember where, but was pleased to learn its authorship. Unfortunately, while I'm sure it's very deceptive to the public, it never really fooled me...and that's usually a condition of my learning something, if it can fool ME.
It's a nice bit of magic though...

A gift. I was thinking this should be in the private section but the only ones who will get it have to have some basic knowledge since the instructions are "hidden" in the description of the effect. It is more about pendulums than bills but...
Effect: a pendulum is brought out or created from “tools” at hand. A dollar bill is borrowed and placed on a table with George face down. The ability of a pendulum is demonstrated using the dollar bill to create the parameters that in the past have often been drawn (see Richard Webster and recently Docc Hilford used old English pennies for this same purpose on his new DVD set). The pendulum is shown to move in a vertical direction when the bill is positioned vertically in front of the performer. The two circular emblems form the "boundaries." The guest holds the pendulum and shares the same experience. The pendulum is next shown to move in a horizontal direction when the bill is placed in a horizontal position in front of the performer. The guest shares the same experience. The guest is asked to hold the pendulum above the emblem with the eagle. The performer describes how an eagle flies in clockwise circles when surveying its territory and/or protecting its young. The guest is asked to close her eyes and imagine an eagle doing so, then to imagine the pendulum moving in clockwise circles. She is told to open her eyes and the pendulum is moving in clockwise circles! Next the “illuminati-eyeball-pyramid” emblem is pointed out. The performer speaks to the power of occult symbols to reverse the normal flow of nature. And we even have an "angels and demons" tie in for a time! The guest is asked to hold the pendulum over the pyramid emblem and imagine it moving counter clockwise. Of course it begins to do so. This an effect in itself of course and also can serve as excellent time misdirection in performing “energy bill.” The performer has now created a mental set about cooperation, transferring energy, causing movement with the mind, etc. Of course, it can be used as a lead in to a variety of effects. Other currency will have to be adapted as indicated by the nature of the illustrations of the chosen bill. That should be a good thing, not an impediment. Enjoy! |
