Hello all I am new to magic, but loving every minute I practice. I did not read the rules before I signed up....so no my name is not Gweedo, it is Paul.
I started my journey in Magic a couple of years ago when I thought it would be great to show some tricks to my nieces and nephews. I started with the stuff I had from when I was a kid, then I went to the library, and finally I found penguin magic, and I bought John Corrnelius' pen through dollar. After that I found the local magic shop and found out that they gave courses so I took level one, and am waiting for level two. I really like the cups and balls ( I have not yet performed for anyone but my wife...still working on them) Sponges, cards, and now I am working with coins. I guess my problem is that I think it is all so cool I have a hard time focusing on just one area. I also live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Have a good one.......then have a cold one! |

Hi Paul. My name is Dan and I am new to this forum. I have been into magic for 24 years, but do not perform often. I have the classic "stage jitters". I can perform many sleights flawlessly at home, but as soon as I have an audience, I clam up. I'm hoping that I can overcome that. And it's not just performing magic...even public speaking is hard for me. I studder in public, where I speak so smoothly on my own.

Welcome to the Café, Paul!
Don't worry about the jitters... that will disappear with confidence. Confidence will come with experience. It's that simple... so go forth and magish! Dave Posted: May 9, 2009 4:16am Sorry... I misread the posts above. CORRECTION.... To PAUL... Welcome to the Café! Don't worry too much about focus right now. It's good to have some basic knowledge in several areas of magic. Just think of it as your 'Window Shopping Phase.' Your focus will become clear in time. To DAN... See my previous post above. Dave

Hi Paul,
I was in the same situation as yourself a number of years ago. This is the best place to meet great folks and learn a ton. Here to help, Eric PS my real name is not papasmurf |

Welcome Paul and as Dave said, don't worry about focus right now, just enjoy. You will eventually figure out what directions you want to take.
I do have to disagree with Dave on the jitter issue though. I have been performing for many years and still get the jitters. This is not a bad thing though and they do get better with confidence. There are many good suggestions throughout the Café on this subject. Dan to you I would say, practice your patter in a sequence until it becomes as flawless as your slieghts. Each time you perform your patter should be scripted so that you know exactly what you are going to say during each phase of your effect. My wife could quote me word for word during my performance, even the same old corny jokes. People that have never seen me before think that I just make this up as I go but they haven't heard me before and it's new to them. The more you perform in public, the easier this will get and this will also help your public speaking especially if you use magic in your public speaking. Hope this will be helpful in some small way and let me know how things progress for you.

Hi Paul,
I am new to the Café as well but doing magic for a long time. Most of the people who starts doing Magic usually try to learn many different styles in the beginning and as jjduck said just have fun, your favorite style will come up by itself... I can advise you to try and perform to friends and family as much as you can, that way you will realize if you enjoy from doing magic or from performing which will lead you to more understanding of your style. Anyway it is a pretty cool place to be... |
