Okay as of the next couple of months I'll be moving and will no longer have health insurance from my job. So I was thinking up ideas on how to actually get health care but this just popped into my head. This is just a dream and probably isn't possible to be regulated and work. But, couldn't it be possible (in some way) to some how make a magician's union where people pay dues and are able to get health care? Forget pensions and what not, just a national magician health care system. If you do a certain amount of shows, paid maybe a certain percentage of each show (a low percentage) to the union and paid a monthly due and you've got health care. I don't know, just a neat idea. Any thoughts?

There's a freelancers union and they offer somewhat cheap health insurance if you make a certain amount of money.

I think it would be cool if even part time magicians could join. It would probably just have to stick to a basic fee since street performers and others basically make all cash. That way nobody looking to hire a magician would have to go through a union. I guess it would come down to being recommended by another magician to be able to join and then paying fees with the annual proof that you are working, that way not just anyone can join. |

elitist Well this program wouldn't be much use if non-magicians could join a magicians health insurance network. The problem with applying to places that offer independent insurance I've found is that you have to pay a high monthly cost, a high premium, and then not get covered as much when you really need it. Unions and companies with a large amount of employees usually get great pricing on the insurances that actually cover the real cost of health care. Coming back to a real solution to my problem, I thought about applying for this All Kids program they have. You have to qualify but it's worth a applying even if they turn me down. Do you have COBRA? If so how do you like it? |

I'm just pulling your chain, mate. I've got very good coverage under the S.E.I.U.
What I actually NEED is some good performer's liability coverage.

Performers insurance is another good thing we need. I know SAM and other places offer it but I've never really looked into it. A friend of mine who performs hundreds of shows a year bought it and said he wasn't happy with it. Althought I have read on the Café that some people buy it and are happy with it. |
