Does anyone know where I can find a supplier for a "Screw Shaft" for use in a levitation effect? Preferably in the US as to save on shipping costs.
Thanks!

Hi Chris,
Not sure this is what you are looking for. I have salvaged screw shafts from things like pens, cane tips etc. For levitation I can emagine you want a small light one. Screw parts of a good quality writing pen could work. Lee valley has a great line of hardware that may fit your needs. http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?......58,62537 http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?......30,43243 Salut, Eric |

Are you looking for a rod with a Acme thread ? This is the type of threaded rods you find in Linear Actuaters. If so they can purchased from McMaster Carr.

Actuators for C-Band satellite dishes and also for trailer lifts are great devices. They are smooth, precise and quiet.

I recently found out about "Make" magazine. For a geek like me, it is a treasure trove of cool projects that can be made from readily-available stuff.
In the current issue (volume 18), there is an article about modifying a one-ton electric automobile jack for servo control. I don't know if the project can be modified for what you are doing (or even if you are interested), but it might be worth a look. It is available at most chain bookstores, or at http://www.makezine.com .
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Trailer lifts have been used in some levitation plans.. but they're slow.. and only go one speed... stop.. and go down at the same speed. There's no way to make them faster.
I don't want to wiat a full minute for my levitation to get up to where it needs to go..and another to go down... David Copperfields pole levi operated on a rheostat... so he could control the speed... and it was beautiful.. started slow.. then picked up a bit.. then just slowed to a stop.. the way (I think) a levitation SHOULD look. |

Yes, McMaster-Carr or also Graingers has linear actuators both in kit form and self contained, but they are typically one speed and strong but slow.
I agree about a speed control but that will take creating the screw drive yourself with a DC gearmotor or an AC one with an inverter. Just make sure you do the math and get the right hp and factor in the coefficient of friction depending on the size of the threads and gearing your using.

Take a look at the rack & pinion gear inside a Pinto front suspension. Just a thought.
