Hi,
I will be doing magic for about 5 to 10 min at my school, It's on a big stage and what trick would be good for that? I trought about Cell-Out, and maybe I will buy a appearence illusion and sell it afther I did the show, btw. And by the way... I don't want to send hundreds and hundreds and hundreds on these tricks. And what do you think about tricky turvy Bottle? And I think I will add KJ Bowl-O-Rama Any Idea? Thanks

Here is what I think.
2 effects, total cost, under $10.00 One, a torn and restored newspaper would be a good place to start. It is inexpensive and plays to a large crowd and is always an audience favourite. Second, if you want to get volunteers up, then Cards Across will be another good choice for you. Again, inexpensive and very powerful. Tricky Turvy Bottles are only good if you have a really good routine. Consider the Rich Bronson routine in the Acer 7 series if you need a place to start. This is often one effect that fascinates magicians, but leaves audiences bored because no thought has gone into on the part of the performer. By far more magicians put this one in their junk drawer then use them effectively. (A few have good, original routines) Kevin James' Bowl-O-Rama is a fine effect, but it only lasts a very very short time. If you are building an act, I would say skip it for now. You want to concentrate on creating routines with effects that will allow you to entertain and not just short quick illusions. As to the large illusions, good luck. First, the average high school student does not have the resources to obtain one. Second, even if they did, reselling them is not a given. There are illusions out there for sale that are gathering dust because people just don't buy everything that is available. You could be stuck with a very expensive illusion that you may not even have a chance to perform again once you're out of high school. So, that's what I think. And, good luck and have fun with whatever you choose to do. |

My experience is, that 5-10 minutes will probably wind up 15 minutes. I would have extra effects.

I wouldn't even consider a large illusion for just a 5 to 10 minute spot. They are almost always very expensive anyway. I do lots of high school assemblies and high school events. The silk to egg effect has a lot of comedy potential and although it's small and inexpensive, it plays really great in a high school auditorium. Also a good cut & restored rope routine is really inexpensive and plays great. Look at some of the routines in "The World's Greatest Magic - Rope Routines" DVD. The DVD is very inexpensive and has some great routines on it, and then the rope and scissors aren't all that much. Also a fun one that you can either play serious or add a lot of comedy to is a jumbo sized "Brainwave Deck" or "Invisible Deck". I personally like using the Brainwave because it just adds an extra kicker at the end with the different colored card. The "Dangle Book by Dick Zimmerman" (add a number) effect is really good. I usually ask for the last 4 numbers in a driver's license number, last 4 numbers in a social security number and also any random 4 digit number. I have a really large prediction number laminated on card stock in a manilla envelope sitting up on the table and I call attention to it before I start the effect. Then one additional thing I do while the 3 different people are writing the numbers down (also to kill the dead time) is say "OK, now while they are writing these numbers down, let me ask you - have I spoken to beforehand or even know any of you who are writing these numbers down?" By the way, if you are attending the school you are performing at, then don't say "Do I know any of you". Just say "Have I spoken with any of you beforehand" Anyway, that routine goes over really great and gets a very strong reaction. It's very inexpensive also. "Dangle Book" can be found at Hank Lee's Magic Factory. Just some thoughts and ideas. Best Of Luck!

P.S. I always have a 4th Person, (it needs to be someone different than the people writing the numbers down) to come up on stage after they have written the numbers down. I always ask for someone good at math to come up and help. I tell them "Nothing too difficult, just adding - but adding big numbers". Anyway, always have them read out loud into the microphone what the total of all 3 numbers are and then have them open the envelope and show the audience. It plays a lot better than if you were to take the prediction out yourself.

Ok I think I decided! I will go with Head Rush, A telekinesis trick by making a lightbulb explode or Proffesors Nightmare.
Thanks to all!
