Does anyone do the ring that travels UP the rubberband? I've never done it for anyone because I feel it's so obvious what's going on. Am I wrong? does this really fool them?

I do this, and whilst some people have worked it out on first viewing, the majority are fooled and it plays quite strong.
As with most things, presentation and context plays a big part. Do it stand alone - and it may look like a stunt. Do it as part of a routine or other tricks where you have proved your magical powers, and they will believe you can make a ring travel up! Cheers, Shafique |

Yeah, this looks great but I would not say it was a 100% fooler. I would prefer to do a routine and incorporate it and if someone gets you turn it into a joke.

I have used as oart of a routine and it fools people.
You must be positive about doing it. You must perform it as magic. This will help. I always remember the I need to believe in what I sell. Mago Mai

This is one of the things that Dan Harlan says that you should do with a rubber band (RB) if it breaks while you are in the middle of a routine. It works very well that way.
I do torn and restored RB a lot, and hand out the bands to the specs when I am done. If the spec then breaks the RB and comes back up to me and asks me to restore it, I do the traveling ring up RB instead. It is quite powerful. Once I was just fussing around with this to pass the time in a theatre before the movie started, and didn't notice that several teenagers were watching from a few rows in front of me. They yelled and whooped when it started to "rise against the force of gravity"! "Hey, do that again!"

I've had both reactions - people figuring it out instantly, and others having to pick up their jaws from the floor.

I did this effect recently because my RB broke during a CMH routine and in got great reactions and will be deffinatly doing it again!
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Great tip about using it as a part of a routine and not as a standalone effect. Thank you for the idea of using it when a band breaks...gotta try that technique of movie theater practicing, Dr. K!:crazydude:

I like to start out with Barry Govan's Ring Link then after I break the band I go right into traveling ring up rubberband. It's a great 2 pair routine.

I do this all the time, and I have never had anyone work it out.
People often think that you are stretching the band, so I get two people to put their hands on mine, and I repet the effect, to show that I'm not stretching the band. |

I love the idea of using it after a rubberband breaks. Thanks!

Awesome,
Borrowed Ring rises upward on a broken rubberband; it's an excellent piece of magic.
It's not the size of the wand,
but the magic in it ! |

Simon, the concept is an old one used in other effects as well, but one place to find the work on this is in Dan Harlan's Magic with Rubberbands DVD's. I'm certain that you can find it in the lterature somewhere. Perhaps in "Elastrix - Encyclopedia of rubber band magic Vol.1" or "Vol. 2."

This has always been a real fooler, and no one has ever figured the method.

This is a great effect that's easy to do, quick, impromptu, and can even use the spectator's elastic band and ring, if they don't mind the elastic band being broken (some of them may even want their ring back afterwards!).
If done correctly, it plays well. For those who guess it, it's a cute little gag. For those who don't get it, you're a magician who's performed an anti-gravity effect. Brian |

Am I only the one who feels that lay people want to band restored at the end of Barry Govan's routine? I do a double band version where you can restore it and it seems to make more sense. As for the travelling ring, I like to present it in such a way that those who are fooled don't feel like like they are idiots, but those who are not don't feel like you are a bad magician since they caught you. It is best to put it as a little bit of another routine and let the audience decide what to make of it, then run with their reaction. |

Personally I do this a lot, and so far I never got caught on this one. I read here that all you guys use a broken rubberband.
I don't think that is a 'must'. I use a normal "wide" unbroken rubberband, and people even start to guess I would be rotating the rubberband, so the ring starts to move up. Works fine for me. Magical greetings, MrClue |
