Jeffs table is his road case.
I do the same thing. my road case is also my table on stage. its called an open top table and very simple to make one. jsut figure how tall you need it to be and make a box with out a top then put a tray inside near th e top to hold everything. obviously there is a bit more to it than jsut that but that is the basic idea. ifyou have any other questions let me know sam

Really, all you need to do is think about what it is that you are going to be performing, then think about hte space you will need.
Then its just a box with no lid and a small tray inside. Maybe make it out of cardboard first to experiment with the size and height. I have littel holders inside mine to hold things like a thumb tip or a hank ball and other items to steal. I also have a spot to ditch as well. I cut a hole into the inside tray to allow me to put the 2 canes I produce into. This way I just drop them right into the hole, no fussing with them. Hope this helps. Sam

I have a cheap and easy solution that may work for you at least until you really know what you need. I bought a black KASSETT Magazine box with lid from IKEA ($14.99 for a 2-pack.)
I rotated the lid 90 degrees and sat it on top of the box, then cut two slits on one side of the lid so that it slid down snugly onto the box. See my attached crude illustration. I set the whole thing on an $8 black TV table similar to one of these from Target. Done. : ) This has worked quite well for me. Let me know if you have any questions. Here's a snap of the box that I made. (Note: that's a jumbo deck, not a really small table.)

Daniel, thanks for the tip.
I picked up some materials to copy your idea, but am going one step further by adding a well to the top

There are lots of variations of open top tables...the "how" isn't the tricky part, it's simply a table with a base and walls around the base to create the open top. What you're asking for comes in tons of different configurations but it certainly isn't a trick, so there's no real secret to how it's made. Jeff McBride has mentioned using a trash can and covering it with cloth around the edges...you could then cut a base to fit into that. I use a table I bought from Tony Clark that he used in a television special, and it has a motor on the bottom and gears that spin. Those are two extreme ends of the spectrum ranging from very simple and easy to make to something more ornate and artistic...I then cut a piece of wood to fit the top of my table so it has the option of being a regular table as well. I would suggest using your imagination, magicdrums. That's part of the fun - coming up with something creative and new! If ever I need some inspiration I'll wander my local thrift store or visit Target and just walk around. All kinds of ideas can come to mind that way.

Why not do a little research and locate the two books written by Dr. Eugene Gloye (published by Magic Inc. in Chicago) called "The Table Book Vol 1' and "The Table Book Vol 2"? They have dozens of practical table designs for all kinds of situations. Really well though out and illustrated.
Somehow a trash can....reminds me of what Okito told his son David Bamberg about finishing the inside of a prop as nicely as he outside. Not because the audience will see it, but rather because you will know it''s not finished.

It would be fun (and helpful) to see pics of what everyone uses for a table...I think I'll start a post in Where to Put it All.
