This is a subject I raised in the Tricky Business area without much useful feedback.
My background is mostly nightclubs, fairs, banquets and college shows. I would like to book more 'promotion-type' shows (outdoor, crowd-drawing stunts for large stores, auto dealerships, etc.) but am not familiar with how to break into these venues. Any advice?

Many EAs start in conjunction with fundraisers then as your name gets around you start asking for money... then increase the asking price over time.
Find a sponsor who will pay you to promote their name or business. Find an agent who understands the difference between a magician and EA - and appreciates the possibilities. Make a just say no show, for elementary schools See if all the elks, moose etc. clubs still have shows. Develop an act with a beginning, middle and end end OR do the big-draw stunts Contact fairs and carnivals, Do the 100 foot rope tie in a tent at a fair and charge admission, occasionally you loose money (hint) but the audience will bring their friends back. Hope this helps.

To be more specific, the markets you want require lots of travel and cold-calling on the phone 40 hours a week. It's very similar work to selling fundraisers except, without the funds (lol) That's what Mario does. They are on the phone constantly. That's what I used to do when I had more energy. It's a grind but the advantage over fundraisers is the person in charge is less likely to change every two years.
You still need to do cheap shows to get publicity. Then after you have some letters of recommendation, stating how much you boosted business, then, you can raise prices. The entire reason a store would hire you is because you will make them money. I know a karate school that paid a small circus 10,000 to perform in the parking lot for 4 hours. They signed up enough people to jump start their business overnight. They made their money back in a month and a half. That's why business people hire us, we bring them the business.
