What are some of the necessities (books, effects, objects, etc.) of being a busker? If you could give me some ideas on how to start out I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Choose whatever effects and objects you like. Read and watch every book and DVD from Cellini, Jimmy Talksalot, Gazzo and the other greats. Read this part of the forum... Watch other non-magic buskers.
And of course: "It´s better to go out and do something, than to sit home and plan something" (Jimmy T.) Håkan - doing something :wavey: |

Have courage
Be confident Leave your ego at home Be able to laugh at yourself Bring Some tricks to get you started. They can be close-up tricks. Take massive notes on what works, what does not work, and when/why people walk away. Get kozmo's DVD. Get Cellini Art of... #1 Everybody has their own way to draw a crowd, keep a crowd and make 'em pay. Don't think you have to do things a certain way. Some start banging sticks and tambourines and skipping to draw a crowd. Some shout and scream. I do close-up material for passers-by until I feel it's the right time and I switch into stand-up mode and do a show. Sometimes I do some hat juggling or linking ring moves to draw interest. Some pass the hat. Some have a tip jar. What really pays off is time on the street. Don't worry about anything except logging hours for a while. Just get out there, try out your best stuff and see how the reactions are. A street audience isn't interested in how good your moves are or how much you know or how seriously you take your magic. They just want a good laugh and to have fun. Don't try to impress them. Show them a good time. And watch those DVDs listed above and get all the busking DVDs you can find for more insight... Street Theatre, Art of #2,#3, CrowdPuller, Gazzo Uncensored, etc. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.

...and something I learned here. Wear comfortable shoes.

Thank you guys so much for your input. I will definitely consider investing in the above DVDs and miscellaneous stuff. For the record, if I do perform, I will be doing it in Milwaukee, Racine and/or Kenosha Wisconsin. Again, thank you for the advice!
