I see this flourish often in magic videos (David Stone, Benjamin Earl, Brian Tudor, etc.), where a single playing card is spun on the middle finger tip (it almost looks like a nervous tick with some performers). Has anyone detailed the specifics of this flourish in a video or book? I can do it sometimes, not other times, it's probably just a knack thing. But it would be nice to see some real tips on the technique involved for consistently doing this.

Dan and Dave teach it on the trilogy... there are many other sources as well.

It's in Card College and called the Pirouette. You can see me do it on the Kingdom of the Red companion DVD during the performance of the title trick. It's a finesse type flourish which takes practice with proper balancing of the card and the knack of propelling the card with the fingers and wrist.

Just thought I'd pop in my own two cents and say this is a real b*tch if it isn't taught correctly. I was taught with a half-arsed explanation (no titles or names mentioned) and I am finding it ludicrously hard to re-tune the 'knack' of it.

Here's another tidbit it took me a long time to figure out. If you have very dry hands (as I do) it is very difficult to keep the card from spinning off of your finger AND it is difficult to get a nice spin with the index finger.
As a quick test, lick your index and middle fingers where they will be touching the card and then try the spin again. If you've been having a lot of trouble with it chances are it will suddenly feel a lot better. Of course the long term solution is to use some kind of treatment on your hands while performing as spectators don't like to pick cards with spit all over them.

The most important thing too is having the card spinning exactly at it's center of mass, so it's perfectly balanced. It takes a while to get the knack, but once you do it's not too bad.

It can be found written up in Card Finesse II as the "whirl flourish" on page 36.

I learned this in Card Stunts- Volume 1 by Rich Ferguson - DVD. It was THE DVD that started me doing card tricks and later magic.
After few years when I watch this DVD, it looks not so good (weird names for the tricks etc), but it gives some good stuff and sleights. I thing it was made for poker players who wanted to be more flashy at the table. |

I spin on the middle finger and lick the tip of that finger, makes a big difference.

Dave Buck's is very helpful. Thanks! I find that if you kick your wrist out slightly at the start of the spin, it will spin faster... just my 2 cents.
