Can anyone tell me the year and month that Bob Farmer's "Bar-Racuda Dice" appeared in MAGIC?
This is Bob's improved set of "Efron" or non-transitive dice used in a bar bet or hustle. A free copy of my Cups and Balls Routine will be sent to the first person that finds this. The concept on non-transitivity is one of my favorite math principles, by the way. There are also card and coin swindles using it. Dennis Loomis

April 2000, pages 80-81.
BTW, for those who miss the wonderful Flim-Flam column, it is back, but now appears in Genii. It started up again in February, and seems to be appearing every OTHER month. Non-transitivity is a great principle, and it's so counter-intuitive! |

Thanks, Scott. Now I can dig it out. Your name comes up frequently in my new Smoke and Mirrors Column out in a couple of days.
There are similiar non-transitive bar bets using playing cards and coins. The card sequence was devised by mathematician Walter Penney and was originally published in the "Journal of Recreational Mathematics." But, it's also detailed in "The Card Magic of Nick Trost." It's on page 89, if you have the book. Dennis Loomis

Dennis, This may be a little late, but Bar-Racuda Dice appeared in Magic in April, 2000, on pages 80-81.
Hope this helps, Dale Hoyt |
