I think it was called "Clowns Around". I have an old one lying around, I got so much mileage from it, but it's falling apart now. It's basically a large cardboard card, on one side a colourful smiley clown, on the other side a colourful sad clown. They stand on their heads, then one disappears, only to end up on your back.
Anyone know who made these, and if anyone makes anything like this anymore? Thanks! Todd

Sad Clown-Happy Clown is a 2 card monte. Clowns Around uses only one card with two sliding inserts, and the clown ends up hanging on your back.

It sounds like Edwin's Magic Arts 'Mr up and Mr Down', which was an update of Supreme's copycats - It was a long thin card with a clown on each side, combining a compass-style effect where the clowns repeatedly stood on their head, with a vanish, leaving behind a cut out portion. The missing clown was discovered hanging from the magician's back. I was credited as the originator by Edwin, but I really only wrote the routine that was supplied with it.
I imagine there are quite a few of these still knocking around as Edwin used to produce large volumes of his silk-screened items - I saw one on Alakazam's stand at the Blackpool convention this year.

Sounds like the same thing, Kimmo. And kudos to you for a great routine!
I searched Alakazam's website, but saw nothing similar. If you happen to know where I could find one, or if you have a contact for Edwin, that would be great! Todd

The contact for Edwin would be a medium, since he passed away almost twenty years ago! (sorry- couldn't resist that!)
Thanks for your comments about the routine. Edwin actually invented the trick and had it made, but was too ill to write the instructions, as his cancer was in the final stages. I was left the job of trying to work out what it did and come up with a script! This is true of a few of Edwin's Magic Arts later effects. All EMA stock was scattered far and wide after Edwin's death, and I do see this particular prop now and again at conventions. I'll keep my eyes open and let you know if I come accross one.

I bought mine many years ago from Hank Lee. I just put it back into my show and it plays really well. I had to do some reconstructive surgery to mine...basically just retaped all of the seams.
I'm thinking of building a new one, myself, with other graphics. I don't know if Lee still sells it. David |

I only have four "Clowns Around". I only wish I could justify parting with one of them.
Seriously , though, I had a similar effect circa 1972... It was called "Silly Sidney" (the Soldier). Silly Sidneyt stood guard outside his guard house. Went behind the house and his uniform changed from red to blue. ..."turn him around!!!", the kids would yell... "No the other way!!!" .... no, not like that!!! (...you know the gag). When the magician finally turns Silly Sidney (truly) around, his uniform is a totally different color (ie. green). Clowns around sound a bit less Military. But Silly Sidney did garner a great reaction as well! Hope you find what yo are looking for Todd. Jonathan
