Tennessee is not the only state with narrow-minded people in it. Northern Texas has its share as well.

Northern Texas is very special. There are more church based radio stations in the DFW area than there are in any other single comparable stretch of land on the face of the Earth.

Just found this thread and wanted to correct some information. Yes, the bluegrass bands, story-tellers and cloggers are part of Gatlinburg's Tunes and Tales summer celebration. Without sanction, it is tough to busk here.
As far as the convention out here in east TN - the Winter Carnival of Magic. I think we have had Max out here before, years ago. We are not bible thumpers, but like Bill said, we are in the bible belt.
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

Khead27 - How in the world did you miss the magic shops in Gburg, there are 4 within just a few miles. and next time you are in town come see my show at the Space Needle. We have a new theater and I do some magic and lots of Comedy Hypnosis.
Bill - There are (at least) one or two wide minded people in TN. |

Jon Dee-I have no idea how I missed them. lol Are they on the main strip? I'll definately check out your show. I'm probably bringing the family up soon. We usually try to get a trip in before the cold weather hits.

There are a total of 4 magic shops in gatlinburg one is in the mall. The other one is right up the street in baskin square. There is one by the seafood place toward the end of the strip in gatlinburg and the last one is in the crafter's village on glades road.
In pigeon forge there is a magic ship in terry's evanswood theater and there is anonther one in a craft shop on the main strip. In Knoxville there is a magic shop called eddie tricks I believe. Hope this helps |

Tabman,
Since we both come from the recording industry and magic, it would seem that one of us would be well informed on combining magic with music festivals. Like Jeff McBride and Whit Haden my experience was with being the opening act for bands in concert. In that role we were forbidden to perform for the same audience in any other way the same day. I have no experience at doing busking type magic at music festivals. That leaves you! What have been your exposures and your observations there? (Besides you lived in Tennessee!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Jeff, Alice Cooper is playing here soon. Will you be here to help them? |

We were open to having a magic busker at the Nashville Folk Festival and I put the word out but got no takers. Well, I did have one but he wanted $600 to come in for the day. I forget his name. I communicated with several and no one was interested. With that said, just check with the promoter and don't try to get money up front but do it for the tip. I'd think there would be some takers.

$600 is a steal for a quality show for a day (how many shows a day??) .. Just curious what DID you have in your budget for entertainment ... If you just wanted somebody to come and work for tips your chances of actually getting a quality performer aren't as great..

What I wanted to do was give somebody an opportunity to make some dough not hire entertainment. I drew a crowd of 3,000 to the stage on my farm in Tennessee with Music and Story Telling. I felt like it was an opportunity for someone to work the crowds around the food vendors (who paid to be there).
What is busking anyway??? You gather a crowd, do a good show and pass the hat. That's how you get paid, right?? Or is that not the case anymore??? What's the difference between that and a concessionairre? Two food vendors paid US to come and set up plus our own concession stand made money. There was plenty to go around. As a magician myself and a magic fan and friend to magicians, I wanted to give someone the opportunity but like I said; no takers.

Oh okay I thought you were trying to book an act.. if I'm getting booked I like to get $600 for my 40 minute parlor show.. which is essentially my street show modified to the specific needs of the client / venue .. here are some snippets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI7Jjdzimyg
your right , I make my living off of passing the hat - so I have of course crashed festivals who didn't pay me to be there... is it an annual event? if so maybe I could come by next year.. I have never been to TN! George |

Thanks George. Sadly, I started the festival with the help of three friends two of whom passed away last year leaving me with little heart to continue on alone. I thought about taking the festival on the road but without Unk Jim and Mark it just didn't seem like much fun, only work.
So what Ive done is sell out of the studio business and music business and gotten back to my first love and interest - Magic. All the best to you...
