I have four doves of my own that I use in my act. The following link tells of a story that I wish did not occur but sadly it does. My own towns pet store even sells does the purpose of what is in the article. Sad!

This is what makes it difficult for magicians. People see stories like this and assume that we mistreat our birds. Doves in the wild are in danger. They are seed eaters and can't survive like other birds in the trees. I'm glad at least some of them were rescued.

Part of the problem rests with the bird release industry itself.
The birds that are actually released by reputable and knowledgeable companies are not doves at all. They are white homing pigeons. They call them doves because that is what people want. The result is ignorant people buy real doves for a do it yourself release and the birds then suffer and die when let go. |

Doves are not treated bad by magicians. Doves are our PETS, not just working companions.

Maloney, you're absolutely correct however, once the public sees something like this, they stop making the distinction between magicians and people that do things like this.
A negative impression is a difficult thing to change.

Animal rights organizations are always on the lookout for bad things like this, and the problem is that most of time they do not care who they blame. They just want awareness brought to the situation no matter who gets hurt. Like Dave said, things like this will come around to us....sooner or later.

Agreed. While many magicians treat their animals as pets and take loving care of them, not all do.
I remember seeing that video in question. That guy seemed like a real jerk the way the animals were treated.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.
