Ooops,
Going back after a particularly abusive day is the strength you need to build. Kozmo, jimmietalks never emphasize that this is a tough way to make an easy living. In some regards most of your energy is not used up doing magic, but other things. Most of the day you are not a "magician" per se. This old Irish pitchman calls it street begging, and to a small extent it is. (Huh?) ((K&JTAL do stress the level of anguish and abuse necassary to do the street thing???) (ooop's my bad!) |

I am also new to busking, and am doing a three day festival next week. I have done a few days on the street, and what I found works is this; I mention the money with a joke once or twice during the show, then, before the final climax, I make a proper appeal.
Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed this show as much as I enjoyed performing for you. But to keep performing I have to make a living. If you enjoyed the show, please show your appreciation by throwing something into the hat. I'll leave it up to you what you throw in, but if you think I was worth the price of a coffee, throw that in. If you think I was worth the price of a pint, throw that in. And if you hated the show, please write your complaint on the back of a twenty euro note, and drop it in. I will deal with it at my earlierst convienience. If you are broke, don't run away. This show is my gift to you, but please show your appreciation with a huge round of applause at the end. I deliver that (with a few more gags) then do the climax, then stand forward (approaching the crowd) and remove my hat, saying: Thank you for being such a great audience, and don't be afraid to show your appreciation. Although I have not had a huge amount of experience that approach has worked reasonably well for me. The two keys seem to be to have some humour in your appeal, and don't be shy about telling your audience that tipping is expected. Good luck.
