Last night, after the show (http://2hatz.com/), we were in the lobby signing autographs, which of course, led to a couple of card tricks.
That was the funnest part of the whole day... with a crowd bunched around me doing my bar set. Omni, Daley's, paperclipped, whatever.... And honestly, I think the crowd felt that was the most magical part of the evening! It's funny that sometimes where the money is isn't necessarily where the fun is. Stage is stage... but, cards... well, they are the best!

For a long time I used to say (and truly believed) that I preferred close-up work to stage because with close-up I could connect with an audience, engage with them, and perform WITH them (rather then at them or for them).
Then I saw Billy Crystal's one man show on stage, in front of about 2,000 people. Every person in the room felt he was talking right to them, and the entire show, despite the large crowd, felt unbelievably intimate because of his delivery, his subject matter, and approach. It was one of the most magical evenings of my life. So, I still like card magic, and close-up magic in general, more then stage- but only because I haven't learned yet how to transfer the skills I've learned performing doing it to stage work. Once I have... who knows? Ben

It's those seemingly impromptu moments, when there is no staging, that can be very strong and lots of fun.

Ben,
You certainly chose one of the most incredible masters of his craft as a roll model! Billy Crystal is an absolute GENIUS IMO! MMc |
