I just recieved an Abbott's Vanishing Dove Cage, and have a problem,.No time to proqure and Train(live)Doves, for a Show I have in a few days..I am thinking that if I have the Cage covered with a Foulard during the show, and at the begining of the Routine,..I bring out a box that you get from your local Pet Store to transport your Doves and make two (laytex)Doves vanish using a "Night Club Box" and using Showmanship,to make the Doves transport to the "Cage" and a quick flash of the Foulard to see the "Doves"and make all vanish.....What's your thoughts?Mike

A show in a few days? Don't risk it. Good magic takes a long time to develop, routine and perfect.

Just out of curiosity, what made you go for the vanishing cage if you don't own doves? Are you just prepping for the future or do you plan to use the cage for something other than doves?

I have a vanishing cage that I bought in a package deal along with several other props. I don't have any doves, but I use it on occasion with a stuffed Zebra. I tell a story about some mean trappers that are catching animals and selling them to be made into rugs and fur coats. I have a circus wagon fixed up to look like a trap and that's how I make the Zebra first appear. He then goes into the cage, and that's where he makes his escape. After I have him vanish and show the cover to be empty I tell everyone that he's back playing in the jungle. It goes over very well at kid shows.

It sounds really lame.
I think the fake doves and inhibited handling will destroy any effect that you might get from vanishing the cage. The audience will laugh at you. You would have to go for a comedy effect to do this, and in my experience, that takes a long time to work out effectively. I would not use the cage until you have worked out a real dove act to go with it. |

Hehehehehehe
Snowpuppy, I posted a reply that didn't expose a thing, nor were there any references to anything obscene or inappropriate, but the powers that be, sigh, delelted it. If you would like a humourous and relatively simple solution to your dilemma, please PM me. I don't think they are censoring PMs yet. p.s. Better do it quick before this post gets deleted for questioning the wisdom of the guardians of the thread. |

Andrew,Yes I'm planining to add a dove routine to my repetore and the cage was a steal compared to the cost of a new one.As for right this moment it will take around six weeks to get some doves shipped up here when I find out which kind of doves are best....Any suggestions guys? Thanks,Mike

Mayby snowpuppy has a really funny personality and has already worked all this out with the comedy and fake doves. Who knows.

This is a funny thread! I myself have thought it might be funny to use fake birds in my act. I'd toss them out as if to set them into flight, but then they'd just plummet toward the ground! I think snowpuppy's idea would be funny to see...and then the vanishing cage at the end would be a real treat of magic. Of course, producing real doves at the end would just top it all off!

Until you get real doves, I think I like the zebra plot better.

Fake doves have been used in comedy bits by many performers, but they are hard to "sell" if real doves haven't been shown on the stage.
They are usually used as quick throw away bits, and if you take them any further than that, they probably won't hold up. |

I have to agree with Whit here, if you were doing a quick production from a silk, tossing the fake on the floor and a few feathers whisk there way to the floor, as a quick gag then the contrast of it being non real would hold up. In an illusion type effect the vanishing of the cage does not make since because the audience will know the doves are fake making the whole effect seem cheap and un-necessary.

No one said it would be easy, or did they?
