I was genuinely excited to discover today that (the famed) Bascom Jones' "Magick" is being re-released by George Robinson of Collector's Workshop.
This is an iconoclastic series that many will want to take advantage of, while the (re)release is available. George mentioned that the work has been painstaking and that he will not do this again. There will be a single run and these will never be available again. Here is the information directly from him: http://www.vikingmagic.com/?nd=notices The (pre-release) price will be $695.00 + $35 shipping. George will happily make arrangements to allow people to make three payments, before their release. These will be ready in late Fall (the site says October, but it is more likely November or so). With regards, Sean |

Too bad. I really wish some stuff would stay underground. Oh, well.

At $700.00, and with a clear indication that he won't be selling the volumes singly, the Jones set will likely remain underground.
That's a lot of cash for any but the most serious mentalist. This field has always had the cash rich collector/reader that will buy secrets at any cost. The upside is that they don't tend to leak methods. But I know what you mean, the most obvious thing being that even at $1000.00 (which is probably what these will go for once the run sells out), there will sure be a lot more of full sets floating around than there is right now. |

...that is correct.
There will not be any single volume sales, but complete sets only. While I completely agree that this is a substantial investment, there is a lifetime of study contained. I have (cumulatively) spent much more on less. (It should go without saying that I have no financial interest in these, but consider this a monumental set of books, that I don't want to miss out on). I didn't mean for my post to be a form of persuasion, but rather simply informational in nature. Sean |

It bothers me a bit that for years many of us (who own the first 4 vols.) were told that eventually the final volume would be printed.
Now it is about to be published and it appears that those of us who anted up our $600. plus years ago will be shut out of buying Vol 5 . |

I agree with you 100%. For a decade I was told every time I came across Rich, "Volume 5 will be out soon". It never materialized. I paid $155 each for the first 4 volumes and never regretted it, I preordered volumes 3 and 4... But I am having a problem with the thought of buying them all again. I know the extras that were not part of the original books will be included, even so... I feel let down by a company that I supported for so many years. Tony Iacoviello |

Have you guys with the first 4 volumes addressed Rich yet with your concerns about Volume #5?
They are very legitimate statements of concern. Sets of books often become unbalanced in the marketplace, leaving a publisher with a couple of hundred copies of one of the books volumes in his inventory that nobody wants to buy, while the other volume(s) sell on the used book market for 5 times as much, or become impossible to acquire. Perhaps if you contacted Rich with these very legitimate concerns you have, he could adjust the number of Volume #5's he's planning on running to accomodate those who could prove to him that they already have the first four volumes of the series (a photo of the set would probably suffice, with your smiling face in the background ). You'd have to make your case now though, it would all have to be agreed to and set up prior to the printing run for #5. (my entire post becomes irrelevant if in fact Volume #5 is actually included with another volume. In other words Volume #4 and #5 in the same binding). |

Collectors has to be aware of how many original sets they sold and that there would be a demand for the final volume.
As Tony mentioned, Rich Bloch must have been asked hundreds of times about the final volume. Rich may not even be involved with this project, and the whole print presentation may not be the same as the original volumes. The point about vols. 4 and 5 together is also well taken. It's just irritating the way the ad states specifically....no single volumes at this time. |

I shall put my head above the parapet and be sacrilegious here …
I think Magick might be a bit overrated because it’s difficult to get hold of. From what I’ve seen, the reality doesn’t live up to the reputation. I haven’t read the whole thing – I only have a few years worth of loose issues that I picked up at a sale – but I wasn’t over impressed. In the issues I have, there are one or two good ideas that could be fleshed out into something. But much of it is very derivative. There are lots of minor variations on things I’ve seen many times before. As a professional performer for 20 years, I found the majority of the contents to be rather average, with a fair number of items that I wouldn’t have considered good enough to publish if I’d come up with them myself. I will now take cover. |

Not everything in Magick is gold, not even silver, but there is a lot of great material in there.
My real complaint is that those who supported the project when the first set came out, and those who constantly asked about the last volume (and perhaps somewhat responsibe for the reissue) are the ones who for now will be shut out. |

Thankfully(?) I haven't purchased the original set and won't be shut out, but I completely agree that C.W. should have made vol. 5 available to the original set owners, something like L&L did with the Castle Notebooks. They offered a pre-order for those who owned the previous books so that they could receive a copy with the same limitation number as the ones they already owned so they would have a matching set. Considering the amount of money one had to spend to get a complete set this issue should have been addressed and set owners should have been given the opportunity to pre-order the 5th vol. some months ago so C.W. would know how many to print up. I made a comment recently in another forum regarding buying books when they first come out to avoid high secondary market prices years (sometimes only months) later, but there's always a couple of exceptions!

Again, has anybody who has serious concerns about getting Volume #5 by itself to complete an existing collection talked to Rich yet?
Complaining here on the Café does nothing but raise your blood pressure Until folks speak directly with Rich, this seems like a non-issue. |

I started asking about volume 5 in April, 1994 when I ran into Rich at HLCCC. At that time he said that there was not enough material for a full book (Bascom had passed away the month before) but that he was in conversations with the family and was looking into including a biography of the man in the volume.
Over the next 10 years I asked Rich no less than 6 times and was always told it was in the works and that the final volume to complete the set would be available soon. By 2005 I gave up asking. Silverking is correct in this being a "non-issue", at least for me. If George wants to sell the new editions as a set, which is what he stated very clearly, then that is his choice and his right. I wish him well. I’m not going to go asking again for volume 5, I’ve been asking for it since 1994 and if that is not enough, I don’t see what asking about it now would change. I’ve purchased many things directly and indirectly from CW and Viking over the years, and treasure what I got. Their service has always been top notch. I once purchased a defective PSIKEY from a dealer; I contacted Viking when I discovered the issue as it could not be replaced. They told me to send it in to them, and I received a replacement directly from them within days, even though I had purchased it from a dealer and it was a discontinued item. That was customer service. Tony Iacoviello |

Mike and Tony,
I feel the same! I also asked for years and even phoned from Germany once. The same answer. I love MAGICK very much and would really like to have the missing material. Does anyone know what exactly is missing? The last issues? How many? The 4 volume set is - as far as I understand the ad - different from the new release. The new release are reprints of the original issues. The 4vol. set had chapters like "Publicity effects", "close up" etc. So, the material was categorized. That may be an advantage. Anyway, I feel let down and of course will not buy the new set. Very sad |

For those that have it, can you share some of your favorite effects from this? Not methods, just effects that you actually do and which issue the effect is found in. I have several books and haven't found a "gem" yet. Thanks!
