For the rough and smooth effect, I recall reading about someone using deodorant. If someone has tried this, can you shed some light as to its effectiveness. Does it have to be a certain brand? I hate that smell of tester's dullcoat, and I'm looking for an alternative.

I don't know about other brands but just tried menen's speed stick. Doesn't work. I would imagine all of them would do what this did make them slick, and nothing else. I've never tried it but have been told by many that aqua net hair spray works well as a rough and smooth alternative.

Try hair-styling gel.

Wouldn't all of these 'solutions' result in a very strange smell to the deck involved?

Why do you guys keep bothering with sprays and gels that are made for use on the human body? And don't tell me that it's an emergency fix when you don't have the right item. You shouldn't be in that much of a hurry to prepare R/S cards.
(HINT - Testor's Dullcote, which is what you will find in some magic shops (relabeled as roughing spray, because Krylon does not make a small enough can)...Krylon 1311 Matte Spray or any matte fixative that is made for use on charcoal or pastel drawings, available in hobby/art supply stores. Read that as made for use on PAPER.)

I agree Stanyon. I tried the deodorant just to make sure it wouldn't work before I posted.
I was also wondering why anyone would not be in a well ventilated room while using dullcote? the O.P. said he didn't like the smell of it. My answer is well you shouldn't be smelling it that much anyway. get a face mask used to by people when painting it will help if it bothers you that much. |

This is Testors dullcote, but is it the correct spray? There seems to be many different sprays available on the net. Here's a link:
Like Stanyon said no one should be in a hurry to prepare a r/s deck. And if at all possilble do this outdoors away from sources of ignition, if you have to do it indoors wear a mask and make sure it's a well ventilated area anddon't forget to warn others in the house that you're "spray painting" as the fumes and vapors can affect them too! Is the following the right spray? ttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360168448470 Found the Krylon 1311 matte though at what looks like a good price. http://www.castlewholesalers.com/KRYLON-......1oz.html Thanks, Adam

Adam -
Can't open the "E" place link. Just get the Krylon 1311 and spray away. Remember, a light coating does the job.

Steve,
I've found that using light coats AND spraying from a bit further distance (18-20") gives a better "grip"? I recently experimented with this and so far am happy with the result! MMc |

That's ultimately the situation Mick...you have to experiment. Just want to make sure these guys have the right tools.

I've used the spray but recently found a roughing stick which is brilliant. It works superbly as an Invisible Deck & a 2 way forcing. No mess, no smell & fumes. It's not particularly cheap but will treat dozens of decks.

Roughing stick ?
I bought one years ago by a magic lecturer years ago. It was OK. The only advantage of the stick is that it is portable and no mess. I wonder if yours is the same of better ?

I've got a roughing stick as well, and find it working very well.
Any idea what material it is? a stearate/wax of sorts? |

I'm pretty sure it is a rosin stick.
