I am running through the first couple of chapters of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic which is basically palming and then some basic techniques. I am right-handed, and my left hand is not as dexterous as my right hand.
Should I solely be concentrating on my right hand work, or should I get my left hand working at the same time? Do the "coin greats" use both hands equally? Thanks! George |

While it is nice to develop the dexterity to do sleights with either hand, it is far from necessary. You will see 99.99% of them displayed in print or video with the right hand, that is because the majority of people are right handed and most likely the magician selling the work is right handed. Never hurts to limber up the other hand and get a few moves with it, but entirely unnecessary.

Not entirely unnecessary. For example, the way my one coin routine works, I had to either learn the M**sle Pass or the French Drop left handed. I went with the French Drop . However, on several occasions I found myself wishing I could do the M**sle Pass left handed. I personally would reccomend learning the French drop left handed, and maybe 1 or 2 other sleights.

Father P - Thanks.. this makes sense. Since there are not many switch hitters in Baseball, it does make sense that coin manipulators would be favor one hand over the other.
Jim - Yes, I can actually do a mean French drop with my left hand (it's pretty mean), but moving coins in and out of palming methods is what irks my left hand most. I definitely will learn a couple moves here and there with my left hand and will leave the major stuff to my right hand. Thanks for y'all's help! |

While I agree that most coin workers proably favor the right (or dominant) hand, there are some situations where it is helpful if not essential to use the other hand to complete a sleight. The "Shuttle Pass" is a good example, it requires a good Finger Palm with both hands. So I'd give the non-dominant hand a chance once in a while.

I recommend practicing in both directions. It'll help you in the long run, for so many reasons.

It's natural to favor your dominant hand in anything you do.
The old adage, "One hand washes the other." holds true. You left hand plays just as important a role as your right. Some sleights you may never do with your left and others may actually come easier. |

For many with a dominant right hand the left serves as a strong anchor. It holds the object while the right twirls the wand, so many sleights or done in the left hand. Not all sleights require dexterity. Pefrom the desired moves with no sleights and see what is natural -- then do the sleight that is consitent.
