I've been doing the Zig-Zag Can for over 25 years. And I do not want to turn this into a discussion on whether it is a good trick (I already understand that the depth of this prop is a problem).
I'm curious what others think about using beer for this trick or any trick. For all of my non-children shows, I use a beer and enjoy drinking it throughout the rest of the show. Someone (a teetotaling audience member) once suggested to me that this was inappropriate. So I'm wondering, does anyone else drink a cold one during his or her show?
"Sure, I do Scotch and Soda in every show. What? You mean there's a trick by that name?"

Yes, it was inappropriate... for that one person and perhaps a few others not brave enough to say anything. But are they your audience or your market?
I have seen plenty of parties where the grown ups are drinking, offer the magi one, and on occasion I've heard them getting beligerantly schnockered. Luckily I have no personal experience with that audience. I believe that statistics show in countries where alcohol consumption is a responsible family occurance there is a lower rate of alcoholism. Either way, when you stop getting hired, you will know something is wrong. Might be too late by then but you will know. As a performer I wouldn't drink a beer. I'm too busy during the act. That goes for soda too. Tom |

Thanks for your take, Tom.
I forgot to mention that at the end of the trick I pour half of the beer into a glass to prove it was a real can. I then hand the half-filled can to an audience member to enjoy (there is always more than one willing taker) while I sip the rest from the glass. I don't believe in drinking alone.

I worked on a cruise ship for a while and the Ventriloquist could drink a beer by pouring it into his mouth in one go--as if he was pouring it down the sink. He did this during his act.The officers got a kick out of it and they often supplied the beer.
