I have an electric deck that I bought purely out of curiosity. I'd just like to know if there are any tricks or simply funny things to do with it.

Here's an interesting idea:

Well, at the risk of sounding ridiculous, the only thing I really do with an Electric Deck is one thing on the order of the Amazing Jonathan. I say "An ordinary deck of cards?", the usually nod their head and then I twirl them around my head and say "Can you do this with an ordinary deck of cards?" I don't do it alot, but it gets a laugh and a smile, and for my persona and my act it sorta works.

I do a running gag with an "nvisible table" on my stage / parlor show. With the electric deck I do a "mid-air table spread", or so to say.
One thing that I do with the el. deck aswell is an idea from David Stone lecture. He does a little waterfall and then repeats it, but he pauses and says "Now, the pose for a picture!", finishing afterwards. One of my comedy bits is the "magic in slow motion" sequence, where I also use the electric deck. |

Do the Waterfall shuffle with the electric deck and say this is the Niagra Falls shuffle. Do it again and say here's Niagra Falls from the Canadian side when it freezes in the winter. Then stop the shuffle so they see the cards strung together - frozen - old gag but it still works.

Jerry Sadowitz has a really neat effect using an electric deck in his book "Inspirations", which was then put into the larger Card Zones book, page 212. The trick is called "Well, I'll Be".
I think this is also in The Best of Spellbinder book.

I just watched an old video of George Kovari where he combines the Electric Deck with a reel for a pretty good gag. Kind of like a muscle pass with cards. Funny!

Here is an idea I have used. Spread the cards in normal pick a card fashion and have the spectator select a card and when they take the card drop the deck, it gets a laugh.

I did this with the electric deck on Halloween in 1984 and got my picture in the paper, and some free publicity:

I've used it in the "Instant Magician" type of routine, as a gag.

Like Johnd said: 'as a gag'. That's all there is to it. Use it as a gag for a laugh. Nothing more. Nothing less either.

And she said, then why don't you? After that I quit carrying the electric deck and did all the moves with a real deck. Now I do that big fan for pictures. Like the one in my picture. An agent took that right before a show. Now I want to get my ED back out and play some more. I bought a new bicycle poker size ED a few years ago, I'll have to see if I can find it. Using a deck switch, I can do some super displays of skill. ACE

I searched and it ended up I did not have a new Electric Deck after all. So I just ordered a new one from my favorite Magic Dealer.
Using the Electric Deck is almost like training wheels. Using the Electric Deck a lot to do all the flourishes, I find it helped me do the same flourishes with a real deck a lot easier. Except, of course, the stopping of the cards. I'm thinking I will carry it around all the time now for "Photo-Ops". Maybe I can let the guest of honor hold the electric deck in the "stopped" position while I do a double fan. ACE
