A few interesting observations I have made this year...
A brand of potato chips launched a new product, with "20% less fat". It also happens that there is 20% less chips, so it IS very accurate...but gives you a rather different idea, doesn't it? A candy bar elusively lost about 20% of its weight. Same size packaging, just less chocolate. A few months passed and they launch it again... "bigger and better". Back to its original weight and a bit pricier... that's propably done all the time, just happened to notice these two (as I like both products). ****es me off...

People don't pay attention, they have the cumulative attention span of one drunken circus monkey, and they have terrible memories for things that do not seem important at the time.
Of course this is why magic works in the first place. Marketing folk are just magicians after all.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

One of my high school students (ESL class) wrote the following in response to this question. When do stores have sales?
Always and Never. They sell a NT$1000 shirt for 1200 and then offer you 15% off all year long. Store owners are smart but they are thieves. |

[*Looking at scale...*] "Rossmacrae, now 20% more charming!"
I knew there was an upside to all that snacking. |

Try selling anything at list price and customers will want a discount. They are programmed to expect it. That accounts for the high "retail" pricing.
