I was considering including a local high school marching band in my show as a tactic to help sell tickets and also create some buzz in the community. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be done with that many people. I was thinking of doing a quick change act with the band leader and then have the band perform a song. I was going to have a backdrop that looked like bleachers and set the stage to have a field goal post so it looks like a football field. This may make for a nice addition to the show as it is, but I was wondering if anyone had any interesting ideas of something else to do as well.
Thanks for any ideas anyone may have. |

Hi magicguy6, I did this last year with a highschool band that ended up placing 2nd in the state competition. They were doing "The Illusionist" soundtrack, so contacted me to consult and give them things to use. What I did with them was a color changing sash (1 minute mark to open with - change from black to yellow), appearing flower banners, and then constructed a transporting door portal for them. You can see it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTJs30HNhlQ
The portal was the finale to their competition that you will see at the 9 minute mark. Hopefully watching may give you some ideas of what you can do with a high school band. You may also want to not use all of them, but rather enough to make it look like a full band. Too many highschoolers in one place, you will never keep their attention long enough to make sure everyone does what they are supposed to do. There is always a few that will think its 'give me props' time, so pick those that are willing to listen to what you have to say. Some will follow directions, but all it takes is one to spoil it. Working with this band was great, as they had many supervisors while the director was talking, and everyone was on point. -Alpha |

Dude, that video was loads of fun for me. I am a 100% total band nerd. I marched when I was a kid. I have one son that graduated this past school year that marched and Devon (my magician son) has been in the High School Band Since 5th grade. He's an 8th grader now and still marching. I have always wanted to do a high school band "magic show". D's not big on the idea of giving away secrets to even a few illusions to that many people which I completely understand. BUT DANG DUDE that was cool. 2nd place in their state contest....congrats to you and The Fort Mill High School Marching Band. |

Hi Styck13 - Thanks! I know what you mean. I was leary at first about it, but they were all very cool about it.
I, personally, was a band guy myself. I am a saxophone player, and was the Drum Major at my highschool way back when. Wore the big hat and lead the band down the field during halftime shows while high stepping/kicking. I used to break dance while the band played, and after the band marched off the field, I would moonwalk off! My folks still have that footage from the 80's on VHS tape. It was nice to be 'back in the saddle' for a little bit. Brought back great memories. Kyle - you the man anyhow.....rockin' the fire in Singapore. No blowing fire near curtains again though...... |

What a massive undertaking. Congrats!
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
