Does anyone still do cigarette manipulation?
Could it be replaced with chalk sticks? Or is it PC as long as they remain unlit? Bato William

Yes, I still do but occasionally I replace them with short colorful rods. The reason many are not doing the cigarette manipulation routine is because of the 'No Smoking' law enforcements in many place.
Anything that shape like a cigarette like the rods I use or the chalk sticks as you mentioned or even crayon colors can be used for the cigarette manipulation techniques. |

Cigarette manipulations in this day and age would be very venue specific in order to be acceptable. Using other similarly-shaped objects can certainly be done, but I'd imagine you'd need to think hard on a plausible reason for using them at all.
Cigarettes had a certain mystique to them... The audience understood that they were both delicate, and when lit, dangerous. Both of these factors made easy manipulation seem less likely. There is also a mystique to smoke itself. It was in itself, an ethereal catalyst for the magic, and a source of betrayal for hiding a lit cigarette. Cigarettes were also easy to justify by the character portrayed on stage. If it was easy to accept the character as having cigarettes, it was easy to accept the premise of cigarette magic. My suggestion is to think long and hard about your reasons for manipulating objects if for no other reason than the fact that you can use methods common to cigarettes. If you decide to use unlit cigarettes, be sure your character and routine gives reason for doing so. Here is a YouTube video of Café member Roland Henning doing a cigarette and lighter routine in which the cigarette is never lit. The concept of the routine is brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEfu0l0kdYs

I can't remember correctly, but I've seen a french or swiss guy on TV doing a cigarette act with the plot of stopping smoking.
At the end he has a small cookie in his hand. The french magician David Stone has aswell brought out a cigarette routine using a borrowed cigarette and lighter and never lights it. But as Michael said, you need to have a very good reason for presenting a routine or act like this that goes with your stage personna. If you're very young you could do a school themed act using chalk sticks or crayons. Oliver. |
