Years ago I saw Mr.Goebel perform and he used the patter of Why fire engines are red. Does anyone remember the trick he did it with?

I can recall his full evening show many years back. I believe George still operates his costume store to this day in Baltimore, though no longer performing magic.
Rev Bill: Give Denny Haney a call. He may be able to answer your question about the fire engine patter. |

Fire engines have four wheels and 8 men. 4 & 8 make 12. 12 is a foot, a foot is a ruler, Queen Elizabeth is a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is also the largest ship on the seas. The seas have fish, the fish have fins. The fins fought the Russisans, Russians are red. Fire engines are always rushing, so fire engines are always red.

Name does confuse people at times. Two different individuals, though: George "Gobel" was the well known actor/comic who did pass away in 1991.
Then there's: George "Goebel": Longtime costume rental store owner in Maryland, but best known to us in this area of the country for his full evening magic act. It was a real pleasure to watch. Last I heard...and recently, George is still around and kicking in the costume business, but stopped performing many years ago. |

As has been noted above, George Goebel (of Baltimore) is very much alive and well. I've known him for 30+ years and, in fact, just spoke with him a couple of weeks ago. A great guy, wonderful magician who presented a spectacular show when he was still performing, and a true gentleman.

To answer the original question, I believe that the "fire engine" patter was done in connection with the Afghan Bands, by Harry Blackstone Senior. He used strips of red cloth. SETH

Hi Seth I believe senior used the afghan bands with his patter of Santa Claus was his grandfather. The bands were used for his beard at night while he slept. --Rev Bill

Martinka recently published the biography of George Goebel as written by William Rauscher. Jim Steinmeyer wrote the foreword. The hardbound book has many great anecdotes and includes a DVD with footage of Goebel's show.
