How did the wedding march (read in "Spangle" by Gary Jennings) come to be associated with disaster or trouble during a circus showing?
Thanks for your comments and feedback. |

I heard the "let's not tell the audience but we have a problem" music was The Stars and Stripes Forever.

That's what I thought, but the question is from a reader of Sideshow World.
I haven't found anything about it so I thought I would ask the group. Thanks John |

Stars and Stripes and the 12th St. Rag are the disaster numbers in the circus. I guess the Wedding March is associated with disasters of a different kind.

I think the fact that Stars and Stripes was a Sousa march, and in circus programs Sousa's marches were mostly 4/4 and 6/8 time and moderate tempo. Circus Bands usually played FAST or Chase music , a few latin mambo numbers, chinese music, slowing down only for the trapeze or web act with a nice waltz like Wedding Of The Winds. The Sousa March was out of the ordinary and played extra loud ,when that was heard ears perked up , and patrons were ushered out under the sidewall in a hurry. TODD: I LOVE THE WEDDING MARCH REMARK HAHAHAHAHAH GOOD ONE!

Yes!
One of my favorite albums (and I've listened to a lot of Louis) was playing W. C. Handy. It was released on CD a few years ago. I never thought of looking for him on YouTube. Wow! And Sydney Bechet...and...and...and...

YES! Utube has made it possible to hear the old tunes once again, and to be able to watch the old masters at work just swingin"' is an added plus.
Speaking of 12th Street rag, It is the first tune I ever learned. I was about 8 years old, my aunt taught it to me. Here is one of my favorites of the tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgSrtU9U05E ENJOY! ROD |

This is my favorite version of 12th St. Rag. It's played by my friend Terry Waldo. This was Eubie Blake's favorite version also.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIN-lV99Pws&feature=related I heard 12th St. played at a circus once. It was at Ringling back in the 1970s. They had set up the cage for the cat act, and then the band went into 12th St. The clowns came out and worked for few minutes. Harold Ronk blew his whistle and they ran out. He intro the cat trainer (I can't remember his name, but it was not Gunther Williams. It was the other guy that wore the gladiator costume). When the trainer entered the cage he was sporting a large bandage on his leg. I never knew what happened, but I can guess. Either a cat or the guys wife took a swipe at him. |

Several of my friends were clowns in Ringling. Anytime they hear the 12th street rag they have an overwhelming desire to jump up and run into the ring. Anywhere they are. That is their cue to cover up what ever accident just happened. I have heard many funny stories about that song and the clowning around due to it.

The reason I get them two mixed up is 'cause they is foreigners and they got them those funny names like Hugo and Wolfgang...and they look so much alike!

I have a firsthand report from a former Ringling employee who was present at the Hartford fire that his first inkling of a problem was the band playing S&S Forever. This person is still involved with training as a part of the PA Amusement Safety Seminars, and yes, dirt is younger than he is, but less well-spoken.
So, based on the above, does this mean that 12th St. is a cue to cover and S&S is the "get them the heck out" order? Chris |

Hi All:
Chris: Very interesting question!!! I just caught a performance of the Carson & Barnes Circus last week here in Michigan, and they used 12th Street rag for a clown number ( could have been a problem , but I don't rememeber any delays,) Junior the ringmaster kept the show moving right along. By the way, if you haven't seen Carson & Barnes yet this year, make sure you don't miss it. Its first class all the way! They are routing into Illinois and Missouri this month. Check their website for dates and cities. This show is worth driving 100 miles to see. The lighting and costumes are fantastic. ROD |
